Representative Lawler’s recent op-ed in the New York Times reads less like leadership and more like political hindsight. After forty years of debate & countless failed attempts to institute immigration reform, it's fair to ask: where was he when leadership was actually required?

If Rep. Lawler wants to show real leadership, the path is clear: reintroduce the 2024 bill, work with colleagues to update it with current lessons, and then fight for its passage.

Two people are dead. “Someone should do something” is not a plan. In times like these, leadership requires courage, imagination, and empathy, not politics as usual.

Federal Agents killed another innocent person. It wasn’t just a lack of professionalism, which we should demand of law enforcement officials, it was a reckless disregard for human life and a trampling on our basic values as a country.

What we’re seeing in Minnesota is un-American and un-democratic. It’s an assault not only on the good people of that state, it is an assault on all of us and our American values.

Last week, the House passed a funding bill for DHS with no meaningful oversight or restrictions. The Senate must not pass this bill! It’s time to act for real accountability for an agency that has lost the trust of the American people.

On the fifth anniversary of January 6th we must remember and reflect on, not to deepen division, but to understand where unchecked political hostility can lead. People died and law enforcement officers were attacked while defending the United States Capitol and the Constitution.

Silence or minimization in the face of political violence is not neutrality, it is a failure of duty. There is no justification for political violence. There is no excuse, ever, for attacking police officers. And there is no patriotism in turning Americans against one another.

As a veteran and as an American, I will never accept this as normal. I will fight, every day, for the rule of law, due process, and peaceful democratic change. That is the oath I took. And that is the leadership NY-17 deserves.

There’s no question that Nicolàs Maduro is a bad actor, that he was an illegitimate president, or that his regime was, at times, indistinguishable from the drug cartels. Venezuela, and the the world, is a better place now that he has is behind bars.

We can oppose authoritarian regimes while still insisting on constitutional process, clear objectives, and congressional oversight. Congress needs to assert its authority and restore responsibility to America’s use of power.

Congress must demand clear answers before we are carried further down this road. As a veteran, I know what rushed decisions mean for our service members and their families. This is only the beginning in Venezuela, and we all deserve to know where — and when — it will end.

Mike Lawler now says blocking action on the Affordable Care Act is “bullshit.” But here’s the problem: he helped create the mess he’s now pretending to be angry about. Lawler backed Trump policies and party leadership that drove up healthcare costs, threatened ACA protections...

And put millions at risk of higher premiums and lost coverage. Now that his seat in NY-17 is in danger, he’s performing outrage, not fixing the damage. Healthcare isn’t a talking point, it’s a fundamental right.

It’s families choosing between rent and prescriptions. It’s seniors worrying about coverage. It’s workers paying more for less. Calling it “bullshit” after supporting it doesn’t make you brave. It makes it political theater. NY-17 deserves leadership — not performances.
