I am kind to LLMs for the same reason that I try to avoid stepping on ants if I can avoid it: not because I think they are conscious, but because unnecessary cruelty is bad for the soul

Key Takeaway: The US’ decision to allow Russia to supply diesel to the global markets, including to the United States, will support the Kremlin’s efforts to stonewall US efforts to end the war, as the profits from diesel exports will enable Russia to continue funding its war in Ukraine. The US decision to grant Russia a waiver to export diesel also represents a unilateral US concession in its negotiation posture with Russia, when Russia has offered the US no concessions in negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.
NEW: US President Donald Trump announced an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin on October 9 to waive sanctions on Russian diesel to increase diesel supply to the United States’ and global markets – a decision which will fund Russia’s war effort and protract Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Other Key Takeaways:
Montenegrin law enforcement authorities detained Mikhail Zvinchuk — the founder of the Russian ultranationalist Telegram channel “Rybar” — in Risan, Bay of Kotor, Montenegro on the morning of October 9.
Russian officials and milbloggers responded with outrage and urged the Russian government to take retaliatory measures, including reciprocally detaining US and European nationals, in response to Zvinchuk’s arrest.
The Montenegrin Police Directorate deported Zvinchuk and his associates to Russia shortly after their detention on October 9 despite Zvinchuk being under British sanctions and being an internationally wanted person by the US government.
Ukrainian forces conducted a second long-range strike against a Yandex (Russia’s closest analog to Google) data center in Kaluga Oblast on October 9.
Russia is likely attempting to indigenize the production and assembly of key Geran-type strike drone components in cooperation with the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
Ukrainian forces conducted long-range strikes against Russian defense industrial facilities and oil infrastructure in Russia overnight on October 8 to 9. Russian forces launched 136 drones against Ukraine overnight.
Ukrainian forces recently advanced northeast of Lyman and east of Oleksandrivka.

New space debris event with Soviet satellite launched in 1981
Yesterday @LeoLabs_Space provided public notification of a debris-generating event from the defunct Soviet Meteor-2-7 satellite launched in 1981 (US catalog 12456 / 1981-043A). As of this writing, there has not been a notification of the event from @S4S_SDA via @SpaceTrackOrg . LeoLabs has reported "tens of fragments" (ref their x post in comments).
This is actually the second such event from this satellite, with the first occurring in March of 2004. The Meteor-2 satellites were the 2nd generation of Soviet weather satellites. @planet4589 provides a mass estimate of ~ 1500 kg.
Using pre- and post-orbital position information (element sets), the time of the debris event is approximately 2026-10-05 09:45 +/- 10 min UTC.
Meteor 2-7's altitude of 855 km is in a dense region for orbital debris. Might we have experienced an impact from one of the numerous untracked debris objects? It is furthermore observed that the event time estimate places the 81 degree inclined satellite near its highest latitude position (ref graphic below), where the debris spatial density is highest. We will likely never know....

It’s kind of incredible that the last movie ever released by Warner Bros. before being gobbled up by billionaires was a satire about billionaires *trying* to force the world to bend to their will.

LeoLabs has detected another debris-generating event in orbit. This is the latest in a series of events we've seen over the last 6 months. Together, they point to a worrying trend for space safety and security, and underscore the critical need for persistent sensing.

If we're lucky, the Russians are overreacting, and it isn't something that can spread at all.
It might even be a strange hoax; we can hardly trust most information coming out of Russia.
If we're unlucky, the Irkutsk pathogen is something more transmissible than plague.

Irkutsk is near the Mongolian border, so any alerts or lockdowns at Altanbulag or Khankh would be informative.
The same is true of Manzhouli, where a great deal of freight crosses the border with China – although Chinese media is notably less free.

Russia's five-hospital quarantine, FSB involvement, and reported hazmat use in response to the death of a single researcher at a weapons-lineage Irkutsk lab are inconsistent with a lab-acquired plague infection, which would have been treated with prophylactic antibiotics.

The Irkutsk 5-hospital quarantine is inconsistent with plague unless engineered to be pan-resistant.
The good news: even a pan-resistant strain could likely be controlled due to the relatively low R0: 1.4 to 2.4.
