My conspiracy theory is that AI is going to be the death of most conspiracy theories. Listen to our search for truth combining government information and nonpartisan reporting at @StateAffairsUS with @suffiyanmalikk
My first We The Builders conversation with @evanburns, CEO of @StateAffairsUS. I think Evan is building one of the most interesting companies at the intersection of politics and capitalism, with the ambitious goal of creating the category of “policy markets” which he says is more important than financial markets. In this conversation we discuss the state of media, the thesis and business of State Affairs and more.
Available wherever you get your podcasts.
@rabois was one of the first believers in the idea and they just came out of stealth with a $70m seed round funded by @khoslaventures and @foundersfund.
To understand how Evan got here, perhaps sharing some of his background is important. He started a media company called Odyssey which he ran for eight years before eventually exiting and went on to start a beverage company called The Long Drink that was wildly successful in a short period of time doing millions in sales. Through that he learnt how important it was for companies to understand policy in real time and have relationships with policymakers.
One of the best things about doing the show is meeting people that lay low and are underrated in the mainstream discourse. I think Evan is one of those people who is going to build a generational company and will be household name in the next five years or so.

From State Affairs Co-Founder @evanburns: “I think what we didn’t realize getting into this — if you look at the legislative process of making policy, there are so many pieces to it and so much data to it… Every bill, if it even makes it, is going to have hundreds, if not thousands, of data points that change along the way.
It’s that whole mix together that becomes the knowledge graph.”

So excited to share what we’re building at @StateAffairsUS @Capitolwire! Such an incredible team 💡
More Americans believe we’ll colonize the moon before we fix K-12 education. This is a policy problem.
We have been building a solution that’s already trusted by many of the Fortune 500 as well as 1/3 of federal and state elected officials in the United States.
Organizations are more impacted by policy than by financial markets. Yet financial markets have been real-time for decades, and policy markets are still nearly impossible to follow.
@StateAffairsUS has raised over $70M from @rabois, @khoslaventures, @foundersfund and others to fix that.
We are creating the world’s first real-time knowledge graph for policy and regulatory markets. This platform is foundationally built on non-partisan journalism and the collection of on-the-ground data that isn’t digitally accessible.
In the future, we believe every executive will watch policy markets the way they watch financial markets. Instead of reacting to regulation, they’ll navigate it proactively.
Policy should iterate at the speed of our most innovative industries.

State Affairs Founder and CEO @evanburns on Bloomberg yesterday:
“The thing about State Affairs that we have such conviction in is that policy markets have as much or more impact on most companies’ P&Ls than financial markets do.
Yet, these executives, the people in legal or government affairs, don't have the ability to keep track of the movement of policy and regulation on a day-to-day basis like they can in financial markets.”

Today we're announcing $70M to build the intelligence infrastructure for the policy and regulatory economy and our story is featured in @nypost.
State Affairs is the AI platform for policy and regulation, already trusted by one-third of the nation's elected officials and by government affairs and legal teams across the Fortune 1000.
Policy gets made in statehouses long before it reaches Washington. Thousands of bills, hearings, and regulations moving across 50 states at once. Our edge is exclusive journalism and original data gathering. We have one of the largest statehouse newsrooms in the country, 2,000+ original stories a month, and on the ground data gathers that both power our AI with signals no one else has.

Every year, World Press Freedom Day (May 3) gives us a moment to pause and reflect on the role journalism plays in our lives and in our democracy.
What it does — at its best — is shine a light.
