More than a century ago, a stream in St. Paul's Highland Park carried stormwater from higher ground over Hidden Falls. On Monday, work began to once again feed those falls with a steady flow gathered from the former Ford site, now known as Highland Bridge. strib.mn/3eyMq4g

Got an icy sidewalk? Why not try putting down some chicken grit? This crushed stone (also sold as "traction grit") is an increasingly popular alternative to sand as it's both more effective at providing traction and easier to clean up.

If fresh snow is left unattended, the snow may freeze to the pavement and be harder to remove. This could lead to using salt and deicers that would otherwise be unnecessary. A broom, shovel, or even a leaf blower are great tools to remove a light dusting of snow. 👍

Clearing the snow on and around your drain prevents potential flooding on your streets. Also, while the leaves hiding underneath the snow might be “natural” debris, they become pollution when large quantities hit the water as the snow starts to melt.

Sweeping grass clippings off of pavement after mowing is an important step in helping to prevent storm water pollution. When they break down it releases phosphorus that feeds algae in our local waterways! Help keep our water clean by adopting a drain at adopt-a-drain.org.
