From 1371-1403, and again after 1433, China banned construction &use of all ocean going ships. The result was a weak kingdom at the mercy of Western nations. Why would we want to emulate this disaster by "pausing" AI development? The "pause" would shut down all AI startup activity &AI academic training &research. It would be very difficult to restart after any such pause.

The Financial Times editorial board comes out strong for an AI pause.
Not just 'pacing the frontier' - "pause development of the most advanced frontier models until the risks can be understood and contained."

I must have missed all of the top notch British frontier models out there?
Or maybe we shouldn't listen to European Doomers when it comes to AI, because they've regulated themselves to death on a continental scale.

I see a 100% chance that they are just making up numbers and there is no evidentiary basis for any of it.
It is irresponsible to put these people on TV without following up and asking how they got those numbers.
Sentient AI thesis is based on botched thinking. There is no innovation in AI that leads to the possibility of machines "going rogue" and suddenly developing a humanized thought process. These are indeed powerful productivity tools, but the challenges with AI unknowns have nothing to do with these sci-fi threats.
A former researcher at OpenAI tells @ErinBurnett he sees a 70% chance of globally catastrophic outcomes from AI: “If the AIs and robots don't actually care about humans and go rogue, then there's numerous ways that that could end very poorly for us.”

The AI Doomer industry has popularized a fake formula called P(doom), or the probability of existentially catastrophic outcomes as a result of artificial intelligence.
None of it is based on facts or statistical proof. It's just vibes. Some of them even have charts and graphs.

Par for the Doomer course.

Two of the reporters on the byline are funded by the Tarbell Center, an AI doomer org controlled by Kamala Harris megadonor Dustin Moskovitz. Tarbell gives journalists large grants to insert AI doomer stories into prominent outlets. @TIME did not disclose the affiliation.

Ideological bias via woke AI is one of the great emerging threats to our country. All the more reason to not sanction an AI duopoly over America.
A library gave you 10 books. Google gave you 10 links. AI gives you one answer.
I’ve spent 8 years building this technology, and that shift is the thing that keeps me up at night. Whoever shapes that one answer can influence what billions of people believe about history, politics and the future.
The AI contest with China goes far beyond chips, compute and energy. It is also a contest over the information AI learns from, the rules that shape its answers, and whether those answers can be challenged.
President Trump has made truth-seeking, historical accuracy and ideological neutrality explicit priorities for AI procured by the federal government.

America must be protected from those who would surrender our sovereignty to international committees and Chinese government bureaucrats.

I’m telling you guys. You don’t understand how weird and anti-human Effective Altruism is. This is only surface level stuff.

EAs/AI Doomers lie with impunity if they believe it will serve an end goal.
They’ve created astroturf right wing groups in DC (I’m happy to name them) specifically for this purpose.

Dario Amodei wants to design the future of AI and civilization.
Yet his brain trust is entirely made up of Democrat operatives and Effective Altruists.
This is why he is promoting a Paris Climate Deal 2.0 and U.N. for AI.

The fact they can be mocked so quickly, easily and beautifully, also explains why they want to control AI.
Brilliant. 👏👏👏
