In the lead-up to #Ottawa's 200th b-day, I'm re-sharing my past stories covering the early years.
After Bytown became Ottawa in 1855, & Queen Victoria made it capital in 1857, William Notman showed up in 1859-60 to snap the first known photo set of Ottawa: apt613.ca/capital-history-th…

Update to my Pre-History of the Laff story: I had no idea why Laff founder Francis Grant & his bros came to Canada most likely in 1845, & guessed might be due to Irish Potato Famine. Turns out they were more likely part of a large & much different earlier wave of Irish immigrants

I started listening to the episide last night, trying to figure out if Francis Grant who founded the Laff came here around 1845 due to the Irish famine (w/ his brothers). Attached is what Google search AI told me. (My article on the Laff here: ashleynewall.ca/2024/04/chat…)

Having recently moved to Beechwood Village (where Vanier North meets New Edinburgh), I took an autumn stroll in the Beechwood Cemetery last weekend to visit Henry Brading's grave, since I've written so much about him & his brewery (est. in 1865, & which folded in 1970).

Henry Brading lived 1835-1903. (My bio on him here: apt613.ca/capital-history-he…)
On my walk-about I also spotted H.F. Bronson's rather substantial monument (he lived 1817-1889).

Happy #CanadianBeerDay to all who celebrate! Here's my collection of vintage O'Keefe's ads, covering the era that O'Keefe's had a plant in #Ottawa, i.e. 1940s-1960s. (Blog post also includes pics & clippings re: O'Keefe's former Ottawa operations.) ashleynewall.ca/2025/10/okee…
New account covering current, retro, & historical Ottawa Senators / #Sens
Dey's orig. rink, 1st official indoor rink for #Ottawa Hockey Club (later & better known as #Sens), NE corner Laurier Ave. & Rideau Canal, ca. 1887 [#colourized]. Colours might not all be correct, but regardless, it brings orig. magazine wood engraving (below in replies) to life.
Full story of Dey's rinks in this @apt613 article from a few years ago, in which I also (naively?) argue against a new downtown arena: apt613.ca/capital-history-se…
