Our Water Rescue Teams safely rescued two residents during near-simultaneous incidents on the Ottawa River yesterday evening. At approximately 18:05, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a call from our partners at @OttawaPolice reporting a resident wearing a black wetsuit and calling for help while parasailing near the 3100 block of Carling Avenue. Upon arrival, Firefighters quickly located the resident in distress. Our Water Rescue Team launched a rescue boat and reached the resident at 18:23. The resident and their parasail were safely brought aboard and transported back to shore. Firefighters assessed the resident and confirmed there were no injuries. While crews were responding to the first rescue, a second call was received at approximately 18:06. Our partners at @OttawaPolice requested our response to the 100 block of Greenview Avenue for a swimmer in distress. A second Water Rescue Team launched a rescue boat and located the swimmer approximately 20 feet from shore. At 18:41, Firefighters reached the resident and safely brought them aboard the boat before returning to shore. These two incidents demonstrate how quickly conditions on the Ottawa River can become dangerous and the importance of always wearing a properly fitted personal flotation device. #OttNews

Firefighters battled a morning fire at Twin Elm Rugby Park in Richmond. At approximately 09:37, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a 9-1-1 call reporting heavy black smoke coming from a structure at the rugby park in the 4000 block of Twin Elm Road. Upon arrival, Firefighters confirmed alarms were sounding and heavy black smoke was coming from the structure. Crews immediately shut off several large propane tanks located beside the building. Firefighters initiated a fast attack and entered the smoke-filled structure. Crews located the flames inside a mechanical room and opened sections of the building to expose and extinguish the fire. The fire was declared under control at 10:08. Extensive ventilation operations were then conducted to remove the large amount of smoke from the structure. There were no occupants inside the building at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. An @OttFire Investigator was dispatched to determine the origin and cause of the fire. A fire watch has been established with a fire truck remaining at the scene to monitor the structure for any flare-ups. Ottawa Fire Services extends its support to the rugby community as they recover from this incident. #OttNews

Firefighters provided medical care as our Structural Collapse Team assesses bank following collision yesterday evening in Riverside South. At approximately 18:07 yesterday, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a call from our partners at the @OttawaPolice requesting our response to a Scotiabank in the 600 block of Earl Armstrong Road after a vehicle drove into the building. Firefighters arrived on scene two minutes after being dispatched and confirmed that an SUV with a single occupant had driven through a large front window and was approximately three feet inside the bank. The driver had exited the vehicle before Firefighters arrived. Firefighters immediately established a medical sector and began assessing and treating the driver for injuries until @OttawaParamedic arrived and took over patient care. Other Firefighters searched the building and surrounding area for any pedestrians who may have been struck. It was confirmed that no one else was involved. Our Structural Collapse Team was dispatched to assess the damage to the building. Due to the collision and the proximity of the gas meter, Firefighters shut off the gas supply as a precaution and advised the Bank Manager. Upon arrival, our Structural Collapse Team inspected the building and confirmed that no load-bearing walls or main support posts had been damaged and that the brick lintel remained intact. The Bank Manager was advised to arrange for the damaged window and wall to be secured until permanent repairs could be completed. We cleared the scene at 19:23 and left it in the control of the @OttawaPolice for their investigation.

Our Water Rescue Teams safely rescued two stranded paddleboarders from the Deschênes Rapids late yesterday afternoon. At approximately 16:59, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a call from our partners at the Gatineau Fire Services requesting our Water Rescue Teams respond to the 2700 block of Cassels Street for reports of two kayakers in distress in the Deschênes Rapids. Upon arrival, it was confirmed that two paddleboarders were stranded in the middle of the rapids and needed to be rescued. Two of our Water Rescue Teams launched rescue boats, with one positioned above the rapids and the other below. Two Water Rescue Technicians entered the water and swam from one of the rescue boats to reach the stranded paddleboarders. Both paddleboarders were assisted into a rescue boat and safely brought back to shore at 17:32. The Deschênes Rapids remain the most frequent location for rescues by our Water Rescue Teams. We remind everyone heading out on the water to be aware of where rapids are located and the serious dangers they can pose. #OttNews 📸 @CapFireResponse

Firefighters battled a second-alarm fire involving two homes near Mooney’s Bay early this morning. At approximately 4:19 a.m., the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting a house on fire in the 2700 block of Flannery Drive. Firefighters arrived on scene four minutes after being dispatched and confirmed a single-storey, single-family home was fully engulfed in smoke and flames. The fire had also spread to the roof of a neighbouring home. A second alarm was declared to bring additional Firefighters and resources to the scene. Crews advanced multiple hose lines toward both homes and entered the residence where the fire originated. At approximately 4:40 a.m., a partial structural collapse created dangerous conditions and all Firefighters were ordered to evacuate the home. At that time, flames were showing through the roof. Once conditions allowed, Firefighters re-entered the structure and completed a thorough search. No occupants were found inside. Crews also searched the neighbouring home and confirmed no occupants were inside. The fire was declared under control at 5:11 a.m. An @OttFire Investigator was dispatched to the scene. An investigator with the Office of the Fire Marshal is also attending. #OttNews 📸 @OFSFirePhoto

Communication matters. An Ottawa Police officer noticed an elderly woman who appeared lost. It was getting dark, and the temperature was dropping. The officer realized she didn’t speak English, and enabled language interpretation technology on his body-worn camera. Officers can connect with people in over 50 languages at the press of a button. Understanding each other clearly helped the woman explain what she needed. The officer was able to clearly explain how he could help her. Language should never be a barrier to getting help. Interpretation technology helps us better serve Ottawa’s diverse community. Tools like this help ensure everyone in our community can be heard. Learn more about how we’re using technology to serve Ottawa at ottawapolice.ca/video. Firefighters battled a fully engulfed bungalow yesterday afternoon in the 5900 block of Prince of Wales Drive. At approximately 15:07, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting that a single-family bungalow was completely on fire. The initial caller, a neighbour, reported that “the whole house is on fire,” which was confirmed by subsequent callers. Firefighters arrived on scene within three minutes of dispatch and confirmed heavy fire conditions, with flames venting through the roof. Two occupants had safely evacuated prior to our arrival and were assessed by our partners at @OttawaParamedic. Crews immediately encountered significant hazards. An arcing powerline had burned through and fallen at the front of the home, creating a dangerous condition. During suppression efforts, a second live hydro line also came down, adding to the risks on scene. Firefighters advanced multiple hose lines around the structure to conduct a defensive attack. As the area does not have fire hydrants, tanker trucks were used to shuttle water from a nearby source to sustain firefighting operations. Due to the extensive fire involvement throughout the home, crews were unable to make entry to conduct interior searches. The occupants confirmed they were the only two people inside at the time of the fire. An aerial ladder was deployed to attack the fire from above. The fire was declared under control at 18:10. An excavator was later brought in to assist with overhaul operations, allowing Firefighters to access and extinguish remaining hot spots and prevent flare-ups. An @OttFire Investigator was dispatched to determine the cause and origin of the fire. #OttNews

Our Structural Collapse Team was dispatched after a vehicle struck a home yesterday afternoon in #Ottawa.   At approximately 16:46, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a call from our partners at @OttawaPolice requesting assistance for a vehicle that had driven into a home in the 100 block of Queen Mary Street. Firefighters arrived on scene four minutes after being dispatched and confirmed a cargo van had driven through a cedar hedge and into the garage of a two-storey single-family home.   The driver, who was the only occupant of the van, was not trapped and was able to  exit the vehicle. Crews shut off the vehicle, entered the home to check for any hazards, and confirmed that no residents were inside after speaking with the homeowner who arrived shortly after.   Structural damage was identified on the west side of the garage and the house. The Structural Collapse Team was dispatched to evaluate the damage and found that a central I-beam was no longer supported after the van had pushed out a two-ply 2x4 post. The team inspected the interior and confirmed there was no additional damage to the main structure or the second floor above the garage. Crews used cribbing and two large 4x4 wedges to support the I-beam until the van could be removed. Once the vehicle was cleared, a two-post T-shore was installed to provide proper support for the beam. A City of Ottawa engineer was called to the scene, and hydro crews disconnected power to the home as a safety precaution. Caution tape was placed around the garage area before we cleared the scene. #OttNews 📸 OFS Photographer Jean Lalonde
