I'm happy to announce that I will join @UMBCBiology as an assistant professor this August. I will be part of the first UM-FIRST cohort.
The Muñoz-Ballester lab will study how astrocytes response to injury is modulated by sex, with a special focus on mild traumatic brain injury

Just a periodic reminder:
RNA abundance ≠ transcription activity.
RNA abundance is also regulated by RNA degradation.

In grad school, I was repeatedly bombarded with emails asking if I’d be willing to be a paid “mentor” to high school-age clients who were interested in pursuing and publishing “research.” I would treat advanced high school “publications” as negative signal at this point.

Let’s just take a moment and appreciate all those non-Nobel winning neuroscientists out there that put in the hard work to show optogenetics was not just feasible, but that it was actually *useful* in the generation of knowledge.
Q: What's wrong with these plots?
A: Pooling cell-level measurements across multiple runs conceals experimental reproducibility. Read more in JCB: rupress.org/jcb/article/219/…

The wildest part of the Nobel drama is that the least-discussed guy left out, Zhuo-Hua Pan, has a better claim on the tech than Boyden and he’s the only one with any shot of turning opto into a real therapy….he just wasn’t at a prestigious institution

A reminder that the abundance of 'house keeping' proteins varies significantly across cells and tissues.
GAPDH (glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase) is often slandered a 'house keeping' protein, and its abundance varies significantly across human tissues.
Let's retire the vague and useless phrase 'house keeping protein'.

I think every scientist values negative results.
The problem is that we often see science too binary. A published negative result can kill an entire field or block it from future funding (Reviewer #2 = "this does not work, shown in XYZ").
If we were more open to accepting that many experiments are based on models and uncertainties, and that results can go both ways, sharing null results would be a lot easier.
I remember a great discussion around this topic with @RandyStout18 at @ResearchHub’s last NYC event.
