Most hedge fund benchmarks rely on funds choosing to report, and the largest funds rarely do. Canoe's Q2 2026 Hedge Fund VIP Index tracks the 100 largest, about $3.2 trillion in allocations, using statements across 18,000+ LPs. Findings are in the thread.
Relative value is where smaller funds keep the edge. The broad RV index returned 5.4% through June 2026, against 2.9% for VIP funds in the strategy.
While firms look to scale AI, private markets are outgrowing their data infrastructure. Canoe's Frances Brian shares three takeaways from InvestOps Europe 2026 on the total portfolio view, fragmented data, and practical AI.

It's official: Canoe is now part of Bloomberg.
For over a decade, Canoe has automated one of private markets' most persistent challenges: turning fragmented, complex data into information investors can actually use. Today, that work continues at a bigger scale.
None of this happens without the clients who trusted us, the partners who built alongside us, the investors who backed the idea before it was obvious, and the Canoe team who did the work every single day to get here. Thank you.
We're proud of what we've built, and genuinely excited for what's next as part of Bloomberg.

Could your team run a reporting cycle if one person were out tomorrow?

Hedge funds got tested in 2026.
A sharp Q1 selloff. A swift rebound. The kind of volatility that actually separates strategies that work from strategies that just haven’t been tested yet.
We tracked 3,586 funds through it. Here’s what the data shows. 🧵
In 2023, just 34% of Long/Short Equity funds beat their benchmark. In 2024, 27%.
That flipped in 2025 (59%) and has held into 2026 (55%).
Two years of majority underperformance, followed by two years of majority outperformance.
Not every strategy is having a strong year. Credit’s own returns have shrunk every year since 2023, from 7% down to 3% through June 2026.
Full breakdown, methodology, and 9 total findings in the Q2 2026 Hedge Fund Performance Report.
