You see now why you must care about what happens in local government?
URGENT WARNING:
408 GASTROINTESTINAL ILLNESS CASES IN TSHWANE -CONTAMINATED WATER LINKED TO OUTBREAK
Authorities have linked 408 cases of gastrointestinal illness reported between 7 and 18 October 2026 to contaminated water supplied by the City of Tshwane’s Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Works.
📍 Affected areas: Zithobeni, Bronkhorstspruit, Dark City, Rethabiseng and Sokhulumi.
🔴 Most patients are children under four years old. No deaths have been reported.
🔴 Laboratory tests detected Norovirus, Campylobacter and Shigella in patient samples. No cholera bacteria were found in the stool samples tested.
🔴 Water tests revealed extremely high levels of E. coli and total coliforms.
🔴 Investigators found that the treatment plant’s water was not chlorinated between 24 September and 14 October because of problems with the chlorine supplier. The water source is also affected by sewage pollution.
🔴 The City of Tshwane closed the plant on 14 October, restored chlorine supplies and reopened it on 16 October, but the water remains unsafe for drinking.
🚱 URGENT WARNING TO RESIDENTS
Until further notice, residents in areas supplied by the plant must NOT use tap water for drinking, cooking, bathing, brushing teeth, washing food or clothes -even after boiling. Tap water may only be used for flushing toilets.
The City is supplying safe drinking water through tankers, with 36 tankers planned in total. Residents should collect water from these tankers and store it in clean, covered containers.
The Water Research Commission is conducting independent tests, with initial results expected from Wednesday. An investigation into the causes of the contamination is due by 28 October.
Authorities have initiated accountability measures, while health teams continue monitoring cases and educating communities.
The warning remains in force until authorities confirm that the water is safe.

The discussion is underway. The @CHR_HumanRights, @UPTuks, is hosting an important panel at the 29th Civil Society Forum on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, spotlighting the realities of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and menstrual justice across Africa.
Our panelists are bringing different perspectives to the discussion. Blessed Maputire, a teenage girl, shares her lived experience of menstrual gaps and how they threaten girls’ dignity, health and education. Tracey Malawana highlights how we can advocate for children’s rights in the context of WASH, how to engage the government and challenge policies that do not entail the safeguarding of menstrual health and human dignity. At the same time, Candice Chirwa emphasizes that treating menstruation as a "whisper" or private taboo prevents it from being prioritized in government budgets and projects.
The conversation highlights how access to safe water, dignified sanitation, and menstrual health resources intersects with children’s rights, gender equality, health, and education. Ultimately, menstrual justice goes beyond access to menstrual products; it is about dignity, equality, inclusion, and the realization of human rights for every child.

1/ On 4 November, Joburg voters will receive TWO ballot papers.
One helps elect your local ward councillor. The other helps determine the overall composition of the Johannesburg City Council.
That second ballot is the proportional representation - or PR - ballot. 🧵

Petrol is going up to R30 a litre 💔 this is completely unsustainable
I love this. Menstrual Leave in our life time is possible. 🥳

So glad work has menstruation as one of the valid reasons for taking sick leave now. They implemented it fairly recently and the recognition that this genuinely can be a reason why you’re off is comforting (at the very minimum). I need this to be a norm across the board.

If DWYPD partnered with organisations already doing the work, we could support distribution AND menstrual health education. Palesa Pads, Menstruation Foundation, Mina Cups, Dignity Organic Pads, (just a name a few) are organisations that can assist with distribution.
The government has returned R125.7 million meant to provide sanitary products to pupils over the past three years, prompting parliament’s portfolio committee on women, youth and persons with disabilities to demand urgent action citizen.co.za/news/where-are… via @TheCitizen_News
