Dr. Patrick Amoth: We believe that the patient knew that he was already ill and reached out to his relatives who transported him from the airport. It is potentially possible that the medication that he was taking masked some of his symptoms and gave a false positive screening

𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚 𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔–𝟐𝟎𝟑𝟎 Health Cabinet Secretary @HonAdenDuale today presided over the National Symposium and officially launched Kenya’s National Cervical Cancer Elimination Action Plan 2026–2030, signalling a major step forward in the country’s fight against one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women. Held during Kenya Cancer Awareness Month under the theme “Accelerating Cervical Cancer Elimination: Strong Systems and Community Action for Every Girl and Every Woman,” the two-day symposium brought together women leaders, health professionals, policymakers, development partners and civil society organisations to review progress and accelerate action across prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment. The newly launched, costed and results-oriented Action Plan is designed to drive progress towards the global 90–70–90 targets—vaccinating 90 per cent of girls against HPV, screening 70 per cent of women, and ensuring 90 per cent of those diagnosed receive timely treatment. The plan prioritises HPV vaccination, early and equitable screening, prompt treatment and long-term follow-up, in line with the World Health Organization’s strategy to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health threat. In his keynote address, CS Duale highlighted key policy and programmatic reforms, including Kenya’s transition to a single-dose HPV vaccination schedule, expansion of HPV DNA testing, introduction of self-sampling to increase screening uptake, and deployment of digital health innovations to extend services to women in all 47 counties. He also underscored ongoing Government investments to strengthen referral systems, expand cancer treatment infrastructure, build a skilled health workforce and advance health financing reforms under the Social Health Authority, aimed at making cancer care accessible, affordable and equitable. The Cabinet Secretary further announced the rollout of mandatory service charters across all public and private health facilities to clearly display government-supported services, a move intended to promote transparency, curb overcharging and protect patients’ rights. Powerful testimonies from cervical cancer survivors, alongside broad multi-sectoral participation, reinforced a shared national resolve to end preventable deaths from cervical cancer. The event was attended by senior health leaders, including the Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni, the CEO of the National Cancer Institute of Kenya, Elias Melly, the Ministry of Health’s Director of Family Health Issak Bashir, and the Head of the Cancer Division Gladwell Gathecha, among others.

Representatives from The Max Foundation today held discussions with the Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga, to share progress on the organization’s partnership with the Ministry of Health in expanding access to cancer treatment in Kenya. The Foundation, which formalized its collaboration with the Ministry through a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2021, has been instrumental in supporting the supply of essential oncology medicines for patients diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia and breast cancer. These life-saving drugs are provided free of charge at select public and private health facilities, including Nairobi Hospital, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, Nakuru Level 5 Hospital, and Kenyatta University Teaching, Research and Referral Hospital. Dr. Oluga praised the Foundation’s sustained commitment to improving cancer care, describing its 24-year track record of service as “remarkable and deeply appreciated.” “We are grateful for this work that has gone on for 24 years,” said Dr. Oluga, reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with The Max Foundation. He emphasized the importance of such partnerships in scaling up national cancer access programmes and delivering equitable care to all Kenyans.

Breast cancer patients in Kenya are set to benefit from a major cost reduction in treatment, with sessions expected to drop from KES 120,000 to KES 40,000 following a landmark partnership between the Ministry of Health and Roche East Africa. Presiding over the event, Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale officially launched the collaboration between the Ministry—through the Social Health Authority (SHA)—and Roche East Africa. This partnership aims to strengthen financial protection for patients battling cancer, one of Kenya’s leading non-communicable diseases (NCDs), in line with the country’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) marks a bold step toward improving access to affordable, quality cancer care, particularly for breast cancer patients. Under the agreement, the cost per treatment session is capped at KES 40,000, with no co-payment required from patients. The partnership will be rolled out across all SHA-contracted facilities—including public, faith-based, and private hospitals—ensuring equitable access to care. Key components of the collaboration include: •Enhanced access to essential cancer medicines and diagnostics •Capacity-building and training for healthcare workers in breast and cervical cancer management •Expanded screening and early detection efforts to support timely intervention and better health outcomes In his remarks, Hon. Duale reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to transforming Kenya’s health system, highlighting ongoing reforms such as the rollout of digital health tools to combat counterfeit medicines and unqualified practitioners. “This partnership is not only about reducing treatment costs; it’s about saving lives, promoting equity, and reinforcing the integrity of our healthcare system,” said the Cabinet Secretary. The event was attended by a high-level delegation led by Roche East Africa General Manager Ms. Jacqueline Wambua. Also present were Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Ms. Mary Muthoni, SHA Chairperson Dr. Abdi Mohamed, Acting SHA CEO Mr. Robert Ingasira, Pharmacy and Poisons Board CEO Dr. Fred Siyoi, and KMPDC CEO Dr. David Kariuki.
