LeBron James says Michael Jordan and Penny Hardaway help him fall in love with game of basketball as a kid: “Those were my two guys. When we finally got cable, when we finally got cable in our household, we watched WGN. I used to catch the Bulls games on WGN. Oh my goodness. It felt like it was a night out like going to the movies. It was like watching Michael Jackson at the Grammys or something like doing the moonwalk. Like it was like that I remember vividly sitting on the floor. And hearing that intro WGN and I had probably till halftime to watch it if it was a weekday you know because I had to get up for school.” That is definitely two great players to grow up watching to fall in love with the game you see similarities in his game with both them players.

LeBron’s IQ is just another decades long lie told about him. That kneegrow is dumb as a tree stump. He was smart enough to keep smart people around him.

I think this speaks to a bigger problem with college football today. We’ve created a world where anything short of competing for a national championship is considered failure. It wasn’t that long ago that you could have a great season without winning it all. Beat your rival. Compete for a conference championship. Win 10 or 11 games. Go win the Outback, Citrus, Sugar or Cotton Bowl and head into the offseason feeling pretty damn good about your program. Now an 11-3 season gets dissected based on why you didn’t make the playoff or why your coach “can’t win the big one.” That’s what we’ve lost. The national championship used to be the ultimate goal, but it wasn’t the only thing that gave a season meaning. And the irony is we’ve sacrificed so much of what made college football unique for an expanded playoff system that still won’t eliminate arguments about who belongs. We’ll just argue about team No. 24 instead of team No. 4. Conference championships should matter. Rivalries should matter. Bowl games should matter. A really good season should be allowed to simply be a really good season.

44 years ago today, Pat Summerall and John Madden called a Division-III college football game. Wittenberg vs. Baldwin-Wallace October 3, 1982 During the fall of '82, in the second week of the NFLPA's 57-day players' strike, CBS needed to get creative with its Sunday afternoon programming. So on October 3, the network sent its top NFL broadcast team of Pat Summerall and John Madden to Springfield, Ohio to call Division-III Wittenberg's game against its rival Baldwin-Wallace — each school with an enrollment then of about 2,000 students. Three other NFL on CBS broadcast teams were also assigned to call Division-III games that weekend. Wittenberg, Baldwin-Wallace, and the Ohio Athletic Conference were each paid $10,000 for the game. The video includes the CBS open and pregame introduction by Pat and John, the first several minutes of the game, and select highlights from this historic CBS broadcast. A very rare and fascinating telecast — and quite a thrill for those players, coaches, students, and communities.

Marvel and DC have never shared a movie in 85 years. Spider-Man and Batman have shared a Fortnite lobby since 2021. And now Goku, Darth Vader, Freddy Fazbear and Sonic stand in the same room, which means Toei, Disney, Sega and an indie horror developer all said yes to a deal Hollywood can't close with itself. One design choice makes it possible. Every licensed character is a cosmetic with identical stats. Vader hits exactly as hard as the default skin, and your character is never canonically beaten, because the player wearing the skin does the winning and losing. Decades of brand-protection paranoia, dissolved by one rule. The other half is raw scale. I was at Epic when we ran the Travis Scott concert, and 12.3 million people logged in at the same moment to watch a show inside the game. Every rights holder in Hollywood saw that number. Distribution like that gets every meeting it asks for. People posted this exact screenshot in 2022 to make fun of where gaming was headed. Disney looked at the same picture and invested $1.5 billion in Epic.

About what you felt when you saw me go down. I know it hurt you... But I'm also glad we went through it together. Because that day made both of us stronger. Losing isn't what matters. What matters is how you lose." (via @Topuriailia)

September 2, 1978 THE NFL CHANGES FOREVER The league's new 16-game season slate kicks off on a Saturday night in Tampa, and with it comes a series of seismic rules changes designed to significantly facilitate offensive play. • "The Mel Blount Rule": the "bump-&-run" and "downfield chuck" on a receiver were eliminated; defenders were now only permitted to contact a receiver within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage. • Blockers were now permitted to use extended arms and open hands; prior to 1978, it was illegal for a blocker to extend his arms with open hands and grasp an opponent.
