Mark Carney: "We're not looking to become a member of the European Union. What we are looking and will begin discussions for unique alliance with the European Union, between Canada and the European Union."
Holding government accountable and debating policy are vital democratic rights, nobody disputes that. What we are standing up for is weaponizing grievance to bully, deny our right to exist, or legitimize hostile foreign powers to bewildel this nation.

August 2026 employment changes:
> Canada -41.7K
> US +162K
Last 24 months net employment changes:
> Canada +2%
> US +0.8%
👇🏻
Over the 12 months to August 2026 (the latest official data), Canada added far fewer jobs in absolute terms than the United States, but a higher share of its workforce.
Headline official figures
Canada (Statistics Canada Labour Force Survey): employment rose by 216,500–217,000 (+1.0%).
United States (BLS nonfarm payrolls, the usual headline measure): employment rose by 603,000 (+0.38%).
The U.S. household survey (more comparable in method to Canada’s LFS) shows a decline of about 624,000 employed people over the same period. The two U.S. surveys have diverged.
Context on scale
The U.S. labour market is roughly 7–8 times larger, so the raw totals are not directly comparable. On a percentage or per-capita basis Canada’s job growth has been stronger. Canada’s working-age population is also growing more slowly than it was a few years ago, which makes the +1% gain more notable than it first appears.
August itself was weak in Canada (−41,700 jobs) after a strong spring/summer stretch; the U.S. added 162,000 payroll jobs that month. Trade uncertainty and tariffs are cited as a headwind for Canada going forward. Both countries’ labour markets have been far softer than in 2021–2023.

“One of Carney’s prescriptions – forging deep relations with like-minded “middle powers” and restructuring to lessen reliance on former allies – has already taken shape in Canada, at a speed and degree to which the pollster David Coletto described as a “wartime-footing government without a war”.
“It’s a government organised around an external threat that’s willing to suspend its own party’s orthodoxies, centralise power to move fast, and measure itself in outcomes rather than values,” he wrote.”

Over the past few years, despite our political differences, I always gave right-wing influencers the benefit of the doubt that we all wanted a better Canada. Today, it’s clear I was wrong. For them, the downfall of Canada was always the goal.
