Prime Minister Mark Carney's investment summit kicks off in Toronto this week against the backdrop of a deepening, "unique" relationship between Canada and the European Union. But while the two are getting closer on everything from trade to defence, there's one area where they're significantly diverging: consumer protection. One is strengthening online commerce rules and airline passenger rights while the other is closing down its consumer-protection department and outsourcing complaints. (Spoiler: it isn't Europe.) This week's Do Not Pass Go newsletter (now publishing on Mondays!) looks at the key role that consumer protection plays in both market competitiveness and sovereignty, with appearances by @KeldonB @matthtfld @CanadaPIAC and others. Plus, the Canadian International Trade Tribunal recommends the federal government take action against imported canned vegetables to protect Nortera's market dominant share, and Rogers angers hockey fans with new Sportsnet subscription fees. Want to cancel your phone or internet service? Better carve out some serious time to spend on the phone for arguing with a company rep. That's because businesses want to make it easy to sign up but hard to leave, and because Canada lacks so-called click-to-cancel laws, which allow consumers to get out of services online without having to call in to speak with an agent. But there's a light on the horizon, with the CRTC enacting click-to-cancel on telecom firms - but not till next year. Tahira Dawood from the @CanadaPIAC joins the Do Not Pass Go podcast to discuss why Canada is so behind on click-to-cancel and why such rules are needed broadly across the economy. 🎧 Listen here: donotpassgo.ca/p/is-click-to…
