Had a chat with PBS tonight about the escalation in the trade war
The trade war between the U.S. and Canada is intensifying after negotiations broke down over the weekend. President Trump announced that tariffs on Canadian-made cars, trucks and auto parts will rise to 50% at the start of the new year, part of a broader round of 50% tariffs covering $28 billion in Canadian goods. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said his country had been preparing for a fundamental shift in its relationship with the U.S., which it no longer views as a reliable partner. @GeoffRBennett speaks to @armstrongcbc for more.

What I Did in Gaza: in October 2023, Jonathan entered Gaza believing it was “the most justified war in our history.” The reality he encountered in the Strip could not have been further from that. Here are excerpts from his testimony, published in The Economist.

This is what has been unleashed in this country: a return to emboldened racism. They feel validated and vindicated. They no longer have to couch their bigotry in polite language. It can now, once again, be raw and visceral. This is what we are fighting people.

The abominable treatment of civilians aboard the flotilla, including that which is documented in footage shared by Itamar Ben-Gvir, is unacceptable. Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs has directed officials to summon the Israeli ambassador to demand assurances regarding the safety and security of Canadians involved. Canada has already imposed strict sanctions on Mr. Ben-Gvir, including asset freezes and a travel ban, in response to his repeated incitement of violence. The protection of civilians and respect for human dignity must be upheld everywhere, at all times.

So much to be proud of, Azam. Congrats on a historically successful run!
This 23 year old kid couldn’t know what walking through the doors of LPC would mean for his life. But he’s glad he did. I am as hopeful and excited about the future of our country as I was then. Thank you to everyone for the warm wishes and kind words. liberal.ca/liberal-party-of-…

The night is still young, but CPC vote change so far: University Rosedale: -11% Scarborough SW: -13% Terrebonne: -15% The CPC at 3% in Terrebonne is less than half their worst riding result anywhere in QC in '25, and could be one of their worst QC riding results ever.

Canada’s latest package delivers strong new sanctions against Russia’s shadow fleet, including 100 tankers. It reinforces the pressure over Russia’s brutal aggression against Ukraine. This sanctions package also targets Iranian drone manufacturers. Important and timely steps. Both Russia and the Iranian regime must feel the pressure and must be stopped. Thank you to @MarkJCarney and Canada!

Carney: Let me conclude by observing what’s obvious but essential: we are both undertaking massive transformations of our economies. Plan Mexico, Canada strong. Our efforts will be strengthened by working together. As President Sheinbaum said at the G7 summit — and I quote — “In an interdependent world, no country can isolate itself.” And as one of your predecessors counseled: among individuals, as among nations, respect for the rights of others is peace. It’s by balancing this respect for sovereignty with a belief in cooperation that Canada and Mexico will build together for the benefit of our peoples.

#Gaza is at a breaking point. I've just seen it myself.   @WFP operates in conflict zones all over the world. Families in Gaza are starving—and we know how to deliver at scale.   We must revive our network of 200+ food distribution points, community kitchens & bakeries ASAP.

Far from nothing, but exactly what it says: a joint declaration of intent to cooperate in this crucial area of mutual interest. Needs implementation. But this is an important step forward and we will work hard to build on that with all stakeholders in 🇨🇦! Let’s get to work! 💪

I spoke with Canada’s Prime Minister, @MarkJCarney. I am grateful for Canada’s support for Ukraine and our people. I informed about all the details of diplomatic work and constant communication with partners. We are coordinating joint decisions and preparing our next aligned steps. Various meeting formats are under discussion. I shared Ukraine’s view on Russia’s true intentions and plans. We see it the same way, and it is obvious that the Russians simply want to buy time, not end the war. The situation on the battlefield and Russia’s wicked strikes on civilian infrastructure and ordinary people prove this clearly. We agreed that no decisions concerning Ukraine’s future and the security of our people can be made without Ukraine’s participation. Just as there can be no decisions without clear security guarantees. Until this is achieved, sanctions against Russia must remain in force and be constantly strengthened. We also agreed on our further contacts with partners. Thank you, Mark, and thank you, Canada, for your support and readiness to work together for a lasting peace.

I am devastated to see thousands of vulnerable Afghan refugees deported from Pakistan to live under the Taliban’s brutal regime of gender apartheid. Girls and women will be deprived of all human rights, including going to school, working and speaking freely. Pakistanis have always welcomed Afghans, many of whom have lived in the country for decades, into their communities. They have treated families fleeing war and violence with kindness and hospitality. Right now, Afghanistan is not safe, especially for girls and women. Forced returns will only deepen their trauma and put them in great danger. The government must halt these deportations, protect vulnerable families and ensure girls can go to school. The international community must also step up: open resettlement pathways and put maximum pressure on the Taliban by recognizing gender apartheid as a crime against humanity. Until then, the world must offer refuge, not rejection.
