Winnipeg, we have a problem. Year after year, more drivers are caught using their phones behind the wheel. The warnings are out there. The risks are clear. But the numbers keep going up. Your messages can wait. Your safety - and the safety of others - can’t. Leave the phone alone. 🚗📵 #LeaveThePhoneAlone #ItCanWait #WPSTraffic

People in cars complaining about traffic, not realizing they are traffic.
Replying to @brent_bellamy
Put drive through there to get out of downtown, it will make rush hour worse.

Check stops should be happening all the time until they rarely catch people.
Winnipeg, we need to talk about impaired driving. Our Checkstop Enforcement teams had an alarming week – and not for the right reasons. Here’s what they encountered: •35 impaired drivers. Yes, you read that right. Thirty-five. Even one is too many. •Two drivers were found passed out behind the wheel. •One driver continued driving after sideswiping multiple parked vehicles. •Another tested positive for cocaine. •Most disturbingly, one impaired driver had a 5-year-old child in the backseat. This isn’t just a safety concern; it’s a call to action. We must do better, Winnipeg. Plan ahead. Arrange a safe ride home. Never, ever drive impaired. Let’s protect our roads and the lives of everyone who uses them. A full breakdown of last week’s Checkstop statistics can be found in the media release below. winnipeg.ca/police/community… #WPSTraffic

Another one at Cambridge and Dorchester this evening. This could have been prevented with some proactive speed reductions. Collisions like this should not be happening on small residential roads. #winnipeg #wpgpoli

Toronto had 22 pedestrian deaths in 2022 and a pop of just over 3 million. Winnipeg had 12 pedestrian deaths for a pop of 783,000. So Winnipeg has more than double per capita. In the years following the switch to 30km/h in Toronto their rate went down by 67% #winnipeg #wpgpoli

In the last several years, ped + cyclists deaths in Winnipeg were higher than vehicle driver/passenger deaths on average. That is scary to think about when you consider that most people under 16 tend to walk or ride a bike to get to and from school everyday. #winnipeg #wpgpoli

Instead of the WPS advertising for people to just slow down, maybe we should lower the speed limits? Even their little video shows a driver almost hitting a pedestrian at 50km/h. @safespeedswpg @BikeWinnipeg justslowdown.ca/

If 50km/h isn't safe for pedestrians according to the WPS, why are the speed limits in residential areas 50km/h? @ScottGillingham #wpgpoli #Winnipeg

Winnipeg has a massive road safety problem. Looking at the data to be presented at the next PW meeting, more people are being killed as pedestrians and cyclists in Winnipeg than inside of cars. This has to change. 12 pedestrian deaths in 2022 alone. @safespeedswpg @BikeWinnipeg

It is important to remember that walking and riding bikes is how many young people access their day to day activities. Why do we continue to put our children at risk? @JaniceLukes @ScottGillingham we urge you to support 30km/h residential across Winnipeg. @safespeedswpg
