2 Sept 1691: d. Shen Fuzong Michael Alphonsus of Nanjing of shipboard fever en route from Lisbon to Goa. Shen had toured Europe with plans for new Jesuit missions in China. In 1687 James II asked Godfrey Kneller to paint Shen's portrait which is still in The Royal Collection.

The barrel-vaulted choir ceiling at Carlisle Cathedral. The decoration dates to restoration work carried out in 1853, but the main ceiling timbers are 14th century in date. 📸 My own. #Woodensday #CarlisleCathedral

The tomb of the Venerable Bede in the 12th century Galilee Chapel at Durham Cathedral. Bede’s relics were transferred from Jarrow to Durham in 1022, and eventually placed in the Galilee Chapel during the later 14th century. 📸 My own. #TombTuesday #DurhamCathedral #Bede

🪎 ✨ A real treasure of a pub - Nellie's in Beverley is still lit by gas lamps and has grown organically over 100's of years into a warren of corridors and cosy rooms. Entering involves stepping down into post medieval floor levels. More 📸 👉 digest.andymarshall.co/treas…

St Tibba was either the daughter or niece of King Penda of Mercia, she became a Christian hermit living a devout, solitary life of religious seclusion
The beautiful shrine to St. Tibba, in Peterborough Cathedral 🤩 Tibba is the patron saint of falconers and is thought to have lived in the area that is now Rutland, during the 7th century.

A very scarce survival. A thin booklet from 1843. It charts the service, illness & pious death of a domestic servant called Maria as tribute to her and an example for others. Interesting social history: leaving us to wonder what Maria's own version would have been like.

Great news that 'The Abbey of St Edmund, Reborn' project at @stedscath has been awarded £7.137m in Heritage Lottery funding! This will see the completion of the Cathedral's western cloister with an Abbey interpretation centre, and much else besides
