Free housing. Free food. Free protection from predators. There are a lot of perks for beetles and other tiny organisms that live covertly inside ant colonies.
But as it turns out, there is a potential downside, too: no way out.
Researchers report that a species of rove beetle has taken a one-way evolutionary journey, evolving a clever way to disguise itself that it’ll never be able to undo.
If they ever stop refreshing their cloak, they will die.
The findings convincingly show how tight knit ecological cohabitation can become locked in. Learn more: scim.ag/4anmwfo

Rove beetles cloak themselves in ant pheromones to sneak into the insects’ nests for protection. But in an odd catch-22, that makes them forever reliant on their hosts. bit.ly/4kjnIF2

Online citizen science platforms like iNaturalist and Macaulay Library contain a wealth of images but are hard to search using text. We are looking for ideas so we can develop the next generation of AI models that can help users to better search these image collections.

Congrats to @JanStundl on a beautiful piece of work!
A new study from the @BronnerLab out in @PNASNews finds that a specific population of stem cells, called trunk neural crest cells, are responsible for the development of bony scutes (or dermal armor) in fish.
