Weekly Earthquake Stats: 11 Oct 2026 - 17 Oct 2026. There were 206 events this week ranging from M -0.28 to 2.77. Check out our weekly playback map and visit scsn.org for detailed information. #earthquakes #seismology #SCSN #weeklystats @CaltechSeismo
#FieldPhotoFriday from our station near Mountain Pass, on the road to Las Vegas. Our field crew visited to replace an aging battery and keep out some unwanted rodent guests. The station is back in good shape, with sweeping views of the mine and surrounding desert. Great scenery for us, but time for the rodents to find a new place to stay.
This week, Caltech’s Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences (GPS) is celebrating 100 years as a division at #Caltech! The Seismo Lab is proud to be a part of GPS and its long history of research and discovery.
Seismo Lab colleagues are contributing to the centennial program, with presentations and discussions on the research coming out of the lab. The schedule also features Seismo Lab voices in discussions on GPS’s history and future!
Congratulations to the GPS community on this milestone from 1926 to 2026, 100 years so far, and here’s to the next 100!
Practice makes perfect! The students at Fremont High school have been well trained with regular drills to help them remain safe at school, and they can take those lessons home to their family! Great job everyone, and thank you having such an important event! #ShakeOut #CalOES #ShakeAlert #LACity #earthquake #preparedness
Reminder: At 10:15am take the opportunity to take part in the Great #ShakeOut Drill! Remember to DROP COVER and HOLD ON! and for more info visit Shakeout.org We just wrapped up the press conference here at John C. Fremont High and preparing for the drill. #ShakeAlert #CalOES #SCEC #FEMA #RedCross

Weekly Earthquake Stats: 04 Oct 2026 - 10 Oct 2026. There were 333 events this week ranging from M 0.02 to 3.48. Check out our weekly playback map and visit scsn.org for detailed information. #earthquakes #seismology #SCSN #weeklystats @CaltechSeismo
#FieldPhotoFriday Staying connected sometimes takes a little backup! Our San Sevaine station near the Cajon Pass shows why having two ways to send seismic data matters.
Connection issues had made the station too unreliable for #ShakeAlert use. Our field crew added a satellite connection alongside the existing cell modem, stabilizing the data feed so the station can reliably contribute to quake detection and early warning. #CalOES
Over the weekend we had our 2026 Annual Seismo Lab retreat!
The day included a visit to Travel Town, team challenges, an escape room, and dining! All nice chances to spend time with friends and colleagues outside the lab and see how our problem solving skills held up under some friendly competition!
Enjoy a few highlights from the day!

Weekly Earthquake Stats: 27 Sep 2026 - 03 Oct 2026. There were 294 events this week ranging from M -0.09 to 3.81. Check out our weekly playback map and visit scsn.org for detailed information. #earthquakes #seismology #SCSN #weeklystats @CaltechSeismo
Spooky season is here! Our field team ventured into a tunnel near Castaic Lake to bring this seismic station back online. With a spare logger and some power parts in hand, they got the station temporarily recording again. A follow-up visit is coming soon, if they dare! #ShakeAlert #CalOES

#EQHistory The 1983 Coalinga M6.5 earthquake had shocked the earth science community that such a large earthquake could occur on a fault that couldn’t be seen on the surface. The Oct. 1 1987 Whittier Narrows M5.9 earthquake was the first event we recognized as being on a blind thrust in LA and eventually led to a very different understanding of earthquake risk in the LA Basin.
Congratulations to Caltech Seismo Lab alumnus Xiaodong Song, recipient of AGU’s 2026 Inge Lehmann Medal!
The medal recognizes outstanding contributions to our understanding of the structure, composition, and dynamics of Earth’s mantle and core. Song earned his PhD at Caltech in 1994 and is now a chair professor at Peking University, China.
His recognition adds to a remarkable Seismo Lab history: 11 of the medal’s 22 recipients have studied, taught, or conducted research at Caltech. That history began with Seismo Lab professor Donald Helmberger, the medal’s first recipient in 1997, and includes former director Michael Gurnis, honored in 2024.
Congratulations, Xiaodong! agu.org/honors/lehmann/past-…
Last week, the U.S. Geological Survey and the Caltech Seismological Laboratory cohosted the U.S.-Japan Natural Resources Panel on Earthquake Research (UJNR). The UJNR Panel is the official government-to-government exchange between our two countries on this topic, and promotes advanced research toward a more fundamental understanding of the earthquake process and hazard estimation between the U.S. and our Japanese counterparts. The joint meeting was extremely beneficial in furthering cooperation and deepening understanding of our common problems, and there were many productive exchanges of information on approaches to systematic observation and modeling of earthquake processes including: the earthquake cycle, episodic tremor and slow slip, strong motion prediction and seismic hazards, early warning and rapid assessment of earthquakes and tsunamis, and recent earthquakes. The inaugural Earthquake Research Panel was held 30 years ago, also in Pasadena, with illustrious Caltech Seismo lab participants (H. Kanamori, T. Heaton, E. Hauksson, J. Hall et al.), as well as from USGS/Pasadena (D. Wald, S. Hough, L. Jones, J. Mori et al.).
