We were promised the Triple Lock would stay when we voted on Nice and Lisbon. Micheál Martin called it the core of our neutrality. Nobody voted to scrap it.
Who changed his mind? Not Dublin, not Cork. Cui bono? Not the Irish people.
Put it to the people. #TripleLock #Neutrality

Government shamefully votes to abolish the Triple Lock, which is at the core of our neutrality according to Micheál Martin.
This is not the end. It still has to get through multiple stages of the Oireachtas. We need to build pressure to stop them and allow the people to decide.

You are not reforming the Triple-lock- you are abolishing it. Stop misleading the public - @paulmurphy_TD

Should Michael Martin go to the people and hold a referendum on the triple lock and our Neutrality ??

The Triple Lock is at the core of our neutrality. Micheál Martin said that that himself.
Scrapping it is a fundamental change to Ireland’s historic position. The Irish people must have their say.
This must be put to a referendum. 🇮🇪

It's galling to hear government trot out the same Triple Lock spin that's been disproven time and again.
"There's a veto" - There isn't
"It's a reform" - They're scrapping it
"We've a mandate" - They don't
"It's for peacekeeping" - Why does it say 'peace enforcement' then?

Tomorrow, the Government intends to ram through legislation to dismantle the Triple Lock mechanism, while guillotining debate and denying the Dáil the opportunity for proper scrutiny.
We are totally opposed to the dismantling of the Triple Lock. It is a vital safeguard for Irish neutrality and helps protect against the further militarisation of our foreign policy and military adventurism.
The Government is seeking to make a fundamental change to Ireland’s longstanding policy of military neutrality, turning its back on commitments enshrined in the Nice and Lisbon Treaties.
This is not a minor legislative change. It goes to the heart of Ireland’s independent foreign policy and our role in the world.
Any attempt to dismantle the Triple Lock must be put to the Irish people in a referendum. The Government has no mandate to make such a fundamental change without giving the people their say.
Irish neutrality belongs to the people, not this Government. It must be defended, not dismantled behind closed doors or rushed through the Dáil.
Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has accused Taoiseach Micheál Martin of “profound betrayal” of the Irish people over the Government’s plans to remove the Triple Lock.
She argued that “scrapping the Triple Lock opens the door to Ireland being dragged into EU military structures, into dangerous alliances, and further alignment with NATO”.

A significant milestone as the Government brings legislation to dismantle the Triple-lock
'The Dishonesty is Staggering'
Fianna Fáil cannot airbrush the commitment made to the Irish people during the Nice and Lisbon Treaties.
@MaryLouMcDonald
Anything less than a referendum is a profound betrayal by the Government.

Does anyone remember
removing the triple lock as being part of either FF or FGs manifesto? I don’t.
Minister for Defence Helen McEntee has said the government has the mandate to remove the triple lock and that the public has "put their trust" in this government to make decisions like this.
