Made my own take on the cavalryman a few years back, we reached similar conclusions but the bison head covering for the horse was an inspired choice, wish I had thought of it.

Recreation of an armored Comanche horse from 1700. Raw hide scales with sand glue on provided protection against arrows and melee weapons. It eventually fell out of favor when guns became widely available.

What Europe was like in 1505.
It highlights the fragmented mosaic of the Holy Roman Empire in the center, contrasted with the consolidating powers of France and Spain to the west. To the east, the massive Polish-Lithuanian union and a growing Muscovite Rus' dominate the landscape, while the Ottoman Empire expands into the Balkans. Italy appears as a collection of wealthy, disputed territories during the High Renaissance.
