NEW: Huge layoffs across McClatchy newspapers today, with some newsrooms gutted by a third. An internal email from management says consumer revenue has dipped 41% and "we cannot continue investing where subscriber interest does not support the investment"

North Carolina/Southern Virginia/Tennessee, Washington State and Midwest are the only gaps. Seattle, Tacoma, or Olympia could pull one I bet. I could see a club working in Des Moines, Sioux Falls, and Minneapolis/St. Paul. Plus NCFC is currently out of it.

The Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild is shocked and disappointed by @mcclatchy 's decision to lay off 33% of its unionized workers at the Idaho Statesman, The News Tribune (Tacoma), Tri-City Herald, The Olympian and Bellingham Herald. This includes 10 journalists in Idaho, and seven across Washington. These severe cuts will hobble these news organizations and leave the public throughout the Northwest less informed about the events and decisions that affect them, and with fewer people holding the powerful to account. These are journalists  who investigated local hospitals, served as watchdogs over state and local government, showed up at every high school game, jumped in to cover breaking news like wildfires, covered news in overlooked communities, and monitored development in one of the fastest growing regions in the country. One of these papers will no longer have a dedicated reporter covering city hall. Another will no longer have anyone dedicated to covering the state capitol. McClatchy has decided that short-term profits for a hedge fund matter more than the wellbeing of the communities that its newspapers are supposed to serve. That is a model that is destined to fail.

On my ride to work I passed this lovely Learn to Ride children's camp. All dreaming of riding to a friend's home, or for ice-cream, to school... Cities must make riding bicycles SAFE for All Ages & Abilities. If not SAFE for an 8 & an 80 y/o, it's NOTHING; don't even call it bikelane. Two actions: Max speed in ALL neighborhood streets 30Kph/20mph Network protected bikelanes - Connectivity

It has been my honor and pleasure to serve as a journalist with Stars and Stripes for 21 years, including nearly a year as editor‑in‑chief, providing independent reporting to America’s service members and families.

I’m proud of the work my colleagues and I do at Stars and Stripes, especially the last six months covering the protracted conflict in Iran. Military families and service members have trusted us to share their experience with the world and I don’t take that lightly.

Stars and Stripes operates within the Department of Defense and receives partial funding from the Pentagon, but its mission mandate and operational framework protect it to be editorially independent from outside military command interference.

Gov. Ferguson's office rolled out a policy last summer requiring most agency media communications --- including email replies to reporters --- to go through them. They also have told agency staff not to tell reporters about this media policy.

Will “GIVE the Sonics back their history”??!! What the… The Thunder HAVE TO! Those are the terms of the NBA agreement and the city settlement of the KeyArena lease trial I covered in 2008. Let’s be clear: OKC won’t be doing Seattle and the Sonics a favor. #HowSoonTheyForget
The Oklahoma City Thunder will give the Seattle Sonics their history back if the NBA grants Seattle an NBA team, per @espn “Sources said if a team was to return to Seattle, the Thunder would cede the Seattle history back to the SuperSonics — just as the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets reclaimed the Charlotte-era history of the New Orleans Pelicans when Charlotte switched from being the Bobcats to the Hornets in 2014.” (Via es.pn/3MLB2SO)
