This is going to sound terrible. I despise the word "hope". That sounds awful, right? How could I dismiss such a positive word. Hope. What is it? A positive idiom to which society tells us we should all cling as tightly as possible?

108 years ago today, a red-headed farmer from Pall Mall, Tennessee did something in the Argonne Forest that still doesn't seem real. Alvin York grew up dirt poor, a hard drinker and brawler, until a religious conversion in his twenties changed his whole life. When the draft notice came in 1917, he asked to be exempted as a conscientious objector. His church opposed war and so did he. The Army said no. His battalion commander spent hours going through the Bible with him, trying to convince him that a man could fight and still be right with God. York went home on leave, prayed on it for two days on a mountainside, and came back ready. On the morning of October 8, 1918, York was one of 17 men sent to slip behind German lines and knock out machine guns near Chatel-Chehery, France. They surprised a group of Germans and captured them. Then the machine guns on the ridge above opened up. Six Americans were killed instantly and three more went down wounded, including the sergeant in charge. That left Cpl. York in command of seven men, most of them pinned flat guarding prisoners. So York went to work. Every time a German gunner raised his head to fire, York shot him. He'd been shooting turkeys in the Tennessee hills since he was a kid and he was not missing at that range. When six Germans charged him with bayonets, he drew his pistol and dropped all six, starting with the last man and working forward, so the ones in front wouldn't realize what was happening. A German officer, Lt. Paul Vollmer, emptied his pistol at York and missed every shot. Watching his men fall one after another, Vollmer finally called out in English and offered to surrender the whole position if York would stop shooting. York agreed. Then he used Vollmer to order other German positions to give up as they marched back through the woods. By the time he reached American lines, York had killed 25 men and was herding 132 prisoners in front of him with a handful of survivors. When a general told him he'd heard York captured the whole German army, York said "No sir. I got only 132." He was promoted to sergeant and received the Medal of Honor. New York threw him a ticker tape parade. Companies offered him a fortune to endorse their products and he turned almost all of it down. He went home to Tennessee, married his sweetheart, and spent years raising money to build a school for kids in the mountains who had no shot at an education. When Hollywood finally made his story in 1941, he agreed partly to fund a Bible school. Gary Cooper won the Oscar for playing him. The man who didn't want to go to war became the most famous American soldier of it.

In 1939, Tennessee played ten regular season games and won all ten by a combined score of 212 to 0. Not one opponent scored a single point on them all year. It has never happened again, and it never will. Tomorrow against Auburn, Tennessee wears a uniform built entirely around the man who coached that team. His name was Robert Neyland. Everybody called him the General, because he was one. He graduated West Point in 1916, 28th in a class of 125. He played line in football, pitched the first no-hitter in the history of Army baseball, and won the academy boxing championship three years in a row. Then he went to France to fight in World War I. He took the Tennessee job in 1926. That was 100 years ago this season. He wrote seven maxims and made his teams recite them before every game, starting in the 1930s. The first one is the team that makes the fewest mistakes will win. If you fumbled in practice, you carried a football with you everywhere for a week. You slept with it. In 1938 his team went undefeated. In 1939 nobody scored on them. Four players off that 1939 team were All-Americans and three of them are in the Hall of Fame. Across those two seasons his defense went 71 straight quarters without surrendering a point. Then Southern California beat them 14-0 in the Rose Bowl. Even that story has an ending nobody likes. The Army pulled him out of coaching twice. Once in 1935. Then again in 1941. In the second war he ran supply in the China Burma India theater, moving materiel through monsoons and over the Himalayas. He came home with the Distinguished Service Medal and the Legion of Merit and the rank of brigadier general. He went back to Knoxville in 1946 and won an undisputed national championship in 1951, at 59 years old. He finished 173-31-12. Sports Illustrated later put him on its all century college football team. Not as the head coach. As the defensive coordinator. Now look at what is on that uniform tomorrow. A star on the back of the helmet for his rank. His actual signature on the helmet bumper. The kneeling silhouette they used to cast his statue. Blueprint lines on the shoulders taken from the 1948 stadium expansion, because he was Army Corps of Engineers and he helped build the place. An interlocking UT borrowed from baseball, for the pitcher he was at West Point. Be honest, it is still an alternate jersey and adidas will sell plenty of them. That is how this works now. But inside the back collar, in his own handwriting, are three words from the seventh maxim. Carry the fight. The only person who can see them is the player wearing it.

Call me a conspiracy theorist. The Christa Pike case was getting massive amounts of national attention. Anti death penalty activists rallied around it. And then magically Pike survives multiple doses of "lethal injection." Now she's in a hospital getting medical treatment (something her victim, who she tortured to death, never received). There's very good reason to suspect that it was botched on purpose.

We have not seen a caravan headed to the U.S. southern border in several years, why now? Oh yeah, there is an election coming and the GOP needs to scare you into voting because nothing else is working.
Over 400 aliens predominantly from Honduras entered Mexico on Thursday, ready to make their way to the US southern border… Here’s footage of the caravan. Someone is incentivizing this movement, this is not organic.

Count the accountability programs your church aims at men's sin. The purity groups. The software. The sermons. Now count the ones aimed at women's sin. Take your time. I'll wait.

STRANGER THAN FICTION, Bollywood Edition: Stick with me and read the whole thing here, because it is NUTS. On Saturday, Ted Cruz goes on ESPN’s College Gameday and gets roundly booed. People try to defend Cruz by noting a bunch of people in the crowd seemed foreign. Texas statewide political candidate Bo French posts a photo of a section of the crowd at the Texas-Ohio State game showing a large mass of Indians in one section. Everyone loses their minds and starts flinging poop at each other over mass immigration and Indian assimilation. Three days later, news breaks that NFL all-star TE Travis Kelce was scammed out of a ton of money by an illegal immigrant and Indian scam artist Siddarth Jawahar. Siddarth Jawahar, an illegal immigrant, reportedly attended the University of Texas for several years. And this is the best part: Siddharth Jawahar hired a political consultant named Jeff Roe to help him get a lighter sentence. Recorded jailhouse phone calls captured Roe and Jawahar scheming about how to manipulate the judge in the case. Jeff Roe is one of Ted Cruz’s top political consultants and ran Cruz’s presidential campaign in 2016. Truth really is stranger than fiction.

My disdain for this current congress goes far deeper than me not voting. 1- I don't trust them. 2-The death of Charlie Kirk 3-The covering for Mitch McConnell 4- Refusal of passing the Save America Act 5- They only worked 72 days so far this year 6- I haven't seen one price drop involving anything 7- no mass deportations 8- Epstein files 9- 9/11 files 10- JFK files. 11- No arrests. The list goes on and on and these aren't in any particular order. I feel disenfranchised and I feel like I have no representation.
