Yes, he's known for his open-wheel career, but Gordon Johncock raced stock cars too. Here at a pre-race press party in Nashville in 1972 with then-unknown Darrell Waltrip and Bobby Unser. They finished 1-2-3 in the race, DW, then Bobby and Gordy. RIP to the 2-time Indy champ
IndyCar had a long dry spell with no new winners between Rossi in 2016 and Colton Herta in 2019. Then had at least 1 new winner every year through '23. Now 2 of last 3 years with no new winner - only driver since Lundgaard at Toronto in '23 was Rasmussen at Milwaukee last year.
It's time to update this list. Most second place finishes without a win. There have been two changes to this in the last three races:
8 - Vitor Meira
6 - Geoff Brabham
Romain Grosjean
David Malukas
5 - Raul Boesel
How soon before Malukas removes his name?
If the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix runs the full distance tomorrow it will be the longest #IndyCar race in history on an oval shorter than 2 miles in length. Previous is 2023 Texas race at 360 miles. Lots of 400 and 500 mile races on 2 or 2.5 mile tracks, none on 1.3.
First all-American #indycar front row since Malukas and Newgarden at Phoenix in the spring.
Alex Palou joined this list of IndyCar drivers who have won at least 4 straight poles. Mario and Michael Andretti, Billy Boat, Bourdais, Castroneves, Emerson Fittipaldi, Foyt, Rex Mays, Rick Mears, Montoya, Power, Bobby Rahal, Rutherford, Sullivan, Bobby Unser, and Zanardi.
This one surprises me. Danny Ongais, who won six IndyCar races in the 70s and had 32 top 10 finishes in 87 starts (in an era when the DNF rate was high) never finished second in a race. Third thru 10th, but never second.
Looking like this will be the first Indy 500 qualifying in a very long time, if not the first ever, where drivers don't have the option to make multiple runs to record a time. Today it's going to be one-and-done to set the initial order.
Even in 2024 there was one delay with the VeeKay crash and Larson waved off. Four cars didn't go - waiting on better conditions. But they did 27 complete runs in two hours and 29 minutes. I don't have the cleanup time on VeeKay.
Boy am I mad. Spent all that time driving to and from Indianapolis this weekend only to find out the @IndyCar race was right here in Nashville! Did these headlines show up in anyone else's "X" feed under Today's News? Maybe you can't believe everything you read on the internet?
Doing some Indy prep today. Found that car #7 has only won the 500 two times. Both times driver's first name was Bill. I think Christian has time to get his name legally changed before May 24.
Doing research and stumbled across this. No argument @BobRahal is one of the all-time greats. The first eight years of his IndyCar career his best finish in the season opener was 14th. He only finished one of the eight. 4 crashes, a fire, suspension failure. Only led 2 laps.
The last two @IndyCar races have each seen a first-time pole winner. Who will be the next to add their name to the list? There are only 8 drivers who have never won a pole. Collet, Siegel, Simpson, Hauger, Rasmussen, Schumacher, Armstrong, and Robb.
Condolences to family and friends of Long Beach Grand Prix main man Jim Michaelian. Just saw him last week in Arlington. Saw him at the first Music City GP. He was always looking at what others were doing, seeing how he could make the LBGP even better. He will be greatly missed.
Career win #1 for @KKirkwoodRacing : 2023 Long Beach, 3rd race of the season. Career win #3: 2025 Long Beach, 3rd race of the season. Career win # 6: 2026 Arlington, you know the drill - 3rd race of the season.
Number of @IndyCar races to first career pole.
151 - Scott Brayton
141 - Eddie Cheever
126 - Michel Jourdain, Jr.
118 - Tony Bettenhausen
117 - Marcus Ericsson
This might be a little too 'under the hood' for the general public but in my opinion the greatest scene from DoT. Having worked with drivers who bent valves overrevving engines I get it Harry. Can't hide from the tell-tale. ;-) RIP to Robert Duvall, aka Harry Hogge.
Sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. George Barber. He'd drop by the tv booth every year to see if there was anything more he could do to make a better telecast. His attention to detail was more than amazing. A visit to Barber Motorsports Park should be on every fan's bucket list.
The thought hit me Thursday watching the Duels. After talking to others in the industry I think I'm safe saying there have only been 4 people direct the Daytona 500 telecast since 1979. Today will be the debut of a new FOX director. He will become the 5th director in 48 500s.
