This morning I finished reading The Ballot and the Bible by @KaitlynSchiess and enjoyed my first pumpkin spice latte of the fall. It was a good morning.

Sometimes ministry is washing your beard in the church bathroom because a baby spit up in it in the nursery.

This little guy and his sibling have decided my garden is a good place to live. Their cuteness is the only thing keeping me from making them move outside the fence and back where the foxes roam.

The apple trees are blooming, declaring new life has come after winter. Even if winter was extremely mild in the southeastern US.

It has been 3 years since the before times. A lot has happened since.

This morning I cleaned up play dough from kids church before communion and my communion tasted like play dough. I should have known better based on @KaitlynSchiess’s lotion story a few weeks back, but I learned nothing.

As much as I’m shocked that @KaitlynSchiess didn’t know what a DeLorean is, thinking it is a Star Wars thing makes sense. It sounds like Mandalorian. It’s a totally understandable error.

I made some Philly cheesesteak egg rolls for supper, and they did not disappoint.

Today I made cinnamon tamales filled with cream cheese icing. They might not be authentic but, like Taco Bell, they are tasty.

We live in a world where a box of gluten free Oreos are cheaper than a dozen eggs. Pandemics are weird.

Reflecting on the circumcision of our Lord (yes I know that holiday was yesterday): Being part of the covenant people of God has always required sacrifice. Sacrifice of the foreskin for all generations after the sexual sin of Abraham is from the beginning.

And that sacrifice marking the flesh was both a consequence of wrongdoing, and a mark of the promise of what is to come. We see in the sign in the flesh both the trauma of youth but also the promise of abundance.

And for Christians baptism has replaced circumcision as the seal of our covenant. No longer is it the flesh of our sexual organs that are marked, but we are sealed with baptism as we identify with Christ’s death. And in the mark of that death, we see the promise of abundance.

This morning the homily was just one of our volunteer clergy reading Augustine. It was fantastic.

I think one of our biggest issues today is that we have bad creation mythology.

Let’s just say it wasn’t yet corrected at 1:15 AM when all the fire alarms in my house went off because of a low battery. Or when I got the children staying here settled down to go back to bed at 1:45. abc11.com/amp/moore-county-p…
Popcorn marketed as whole-grain still doesn’t make sense to me. What other kind of popcorn is there?

I’m excited for Advent songs at church.
My 5 year-old niece just said “I’m trying to read this big word, but it’s not working out.” And that’s how I feel like my life is going right now.

All these people out here freaking out that Jeopardy got the author of Hebrews wrong like we know more about it’s authorship than those second century Christians who accepted it as Pauline and translated to Greek by Luke. 🙄
