In recognition of World Animal Day, we wanted to introduce you to one of California's hardest-working nature-based solutions with four legs: the beaver. 🦫🌿
Beavers are powerful ecosystem engineers. Their dams can create wetlands, improve habitat, slow water and help landscapes better withstand drought, wildfire and climate change. At the Cosumnes River Preserve, California partners are testing simple coexistence tools that keep water-control structures working while letting beavers stay on the landscape.
Why does that matter? Beavers can create wetlands, support wildlife habitat and help landscapes hold onto water - benefits that can strengthen resilience to drought, wildfire and climate change.
It's a nature-based solution with a simple idea at its core: work with nature, not against it. Happy World Animal Day!

This week, California announced that more than 3.5 million acres of lands and coastal waters have been added to the state's conservation count since 2022 - putting us past the halfway mark toward the additional conservation needed to reach @30x30CA.
Orange County shows what that progress looks like locally.
For 30 years, the Nature Reserve of Orange County and Natural Communities Coalition have brought together landowners, wildlife agencies, researchers, local governments and conservation partners to protect and restore more than 38,000 acres of habitat.
Secretary @WadeCrowfoot joined partners to celebrate that milestone - and the long-term collaboration protecting species like the California gnatcatcher, orange-throated whiptail and cactus wren while strengthening the resilience of the landscape.
California can set ambitious statewide goals like 30x30. But reaching them happens through local action, trusted partnerships and decades of stewardship.
That's how big goals become real progress.

Yesterday in Sacramento, I joined leaders of the State of California, members of the California State Legislature and members of the Nigerian community to celebrate the establishment of the California-Lagos Sister-State relationship.
This agreement shows the strong connections that already exist between our people, especially the many Nigerians who have built lives and careers in California while continuing to contribute to Nigeria.
Lagos and California have much in common. We are both centres of business, technology, entertainment, creativity, innovation and we share a strong connection to the coast. There is much we can learn from each other and even more we can build together.
I was particularly pleased to celebrate with Nigerians who continue to make us proud in California, including California’s Transportation Secretary, Toks Omishakin, and former NBA champion Festus Ezeli. Their stories, along with those of many other Nigerians in California, show us that the relationship between Lagos and California has always been about people.
My appreciation goes to Assemblymembers Matt Haney and Isaac Bryan for championing this resolution, Mayor Kevin McCarty of Sacramento, and everyone who helped make this important milestone possible.
We look forward to turning this new relationship into real opportunities for our people and building an even stronger bridge between Lagos and California.

We're being hit with extreme heat earlier and longer than ever before.
Throughout the summer, California has mobilized to protect Californians from dangerous temperatures, prevented power outages by reducing strain on our electric grid, and expanded outreach and safety alerts.

Did you know that California wildlife officers not only protect the biodiversity of our state but also play an important role in protecting wildlife around the world?
It has been ten years since Assembly Bill 96 went into effect on July 1, 2016. This law closed a loophole that has helped wildlife officers prosecute violators for the illegal sales of ivory and rhino horn, allowing them to take down networks of traffickers.
Thanks to our wildlife officers at @CaliforniaDFW for protecting biodiversity near and far!
