Incredibly bloody week of drone attacks in Sudan, most recently in Abyei yesterday, but also West Kordofan, Nyala, and Khartoum.
More than 250 people killed since Friday.
Civilian gatherings, in particular markets, are constant targets.

The camp leaders also said: we can show you the graves.
And we drove with them through a dusty field on the outskirts of the camp to the site where they bury the dead.
Graves like these are the true measure of DOGE and the new US humanitarian model.

They brought us to talk to camp residents who had lost friends and neighbors last year, when the US gave even *less* for Sudan than they have this year.
These families gave wrenching accounts about watching people they knew dying as US-funded projects were suspended.

What does this mean for the people there? I asked camp leaders in Gozalaslam camp whether the aid cuts since last year had killed people. They nodded vigorously and said “ktir, ktir” (many, many).
Children starved, women with labor complications were unable to get basic care.

Meanwhile the World Food Programme has had to massively cut back its food deliveries in the world’s largest hunger crisis.
They are struggling to even provide a half-ration to starving people, and are cutting out hundreds of thousands of refugees entirely.

I met Sudan’s heroic Emergency Response Rooms - brave community volunteers who have done amazing work throughout the war. They kept aid flowing in RSF-occupied areas even when int’l orgs pulled back.
Until DOGE, that is.
An ERR leader told me: “The USAID cuts broke our backs.”

2026 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Navi Pillay’s commitment to universal legal principles and her firm moral compass are constants in a long career. Born into a family of Indian Tamil origin under apartheid in Durban, South Africa, Pillay became a lawyer and legal pioneer, confronting deep structural discrimination, segregation and exclusion. A common thread runs from her early work defending Nelson Mandela and others who stood up against apartheid to her service as a judge in some of the key international court cases of our time.
This year’s laureate has significantly enlarged the scope and impact of international law. She has served as a judge on the High Court in South Africa, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court. She was the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and, until recently, she chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Today Navi Pillay is a judge on the International Court of Justice in the case where Myanmar stands accused of genocide.
In historic international court cases, she has shown that legal measures can help prevent acts of war and violence. Navi Pillay has also contributed to strengthen the institutions of international law. Her independence, expertise and steadfastness have made her one of the most respected international jurists of our time.

NEW: Israeli mercenary spyware company Paragon is going public.
Remember their 'ethical' Graphite spyware? That WhatsApp caught targeting journalists & activists in Italy & we forensically confirmed?
Now, Paragon vows global expansion.
I predict trouble.
Public markets demand growth, but the total pool of potential mercenary spyware customers that (a) won't abuse the tool and/or (b) are disciplined enough to never get caught is finite.
Proof: NSO, Candiru, QuaDream, Intellexa... all had exactly this problem. All got burned.
Can Paragon be the exception to the laws of spyware physics? Their whole pitch was that they sold to a very select group of democracies. Well, Italy was a democracy and abuses followed.
Paragon already has a messy abuse scandal... I think something will give. 1/

As the situation escalates in northern Ethiopia, keep in mind that there is an ongoing conflict in Amhara, that Tigray forces & Ethiopia's military have engaged in sporadic fighting over the past 2 months, and that the ENDF has conducted drone strikes in both Tigray & Amhara.
⚡️Over 83 regime forces killed as regime retaliatory artillery and drone strikes destroy more than 20 homes and kill civilians in Alefa Woreda (📍Central Gonder Zone, Amhara Region, Ethiopia).
🔵 On September 20th, Fano units under the 16th and 55th Divisions (AFNM-BC) infiltrated Shawra Town, triggering several consecutive hours of fighting. Regime forces initially sustained heavy casualties and abandoned their camps before responding with extensive heavy-weapons bombardment.
🔴 Regime forces used mortars, DShK heavy machine guns, ZU-23 anti-aircraft guns, heavy artillery, and repeated drone strikes against former military positions and civilian neighborhoods, completely destroying more than 20 residential homes and causing significant civilian casualties. The bombardment eventually prompted Fano forces to withdraw from the town.
🔵 During the fighting, more than 83 regime personnel were reportedly killed and 29 critically wounded. Fano forces also seized numerous firearms during the engagement.
🔴 Civilian victims included Setech Anagaw, a woman from Mandela village, and a deacon from Shawra-Maryam Church, who were killed. Another deacon was critically injured, while a woman and her child were severely wounded in the shelling.
