I've joined @zitamarnews as contributing editor in Luanda. Our latest Angola Briefing, with Fernando Lima, on Lourenço's State of the Nation: inflation and debt are down, non-oil growth is real, but I'm sceptical of the jobs numbers. You can watch it here: youtube.com/live/n6Y4NqvPiN8…

Absolute banger of an essay on African cities from @Jacob_Judah @davidpilling @FT !! Thread of excerpts below ⬇️
"Cities are the crucible of modernity. Their rise in Africa will affect everything from income and economic growth to social attitudes and politics." 🌆🌆

.@RoadsKingdoms has shaped how I see travel, food and politics more than almost any other publication or outfit. So I'm proud to have a Luanda story in Issue 2, The Sixth Taste, their second print issue. A thread on why this one matters to me. 🧵
Luanda is a city that rewards patience and a second look. It feels right to see it on the page in an issue about how context changes everything. The R&K 50, their unranked list of the restaurants chefs and writers treat as second homes, is back too.
In a moment when everything is optimised for the scroll, there is something quietly defiant about a print magazine that asks you to slow down and turn the page. Get a copy here: roadsandkingdoms.com/product…

#Angola: Back on @ZitamarNews' #Angola Briefing yesterday, this time to discuss the #LobitoCorridor with @CaipLounge - specifically where the project is at the moment and who it may benefit. It's an important, if complex, question. Have a watch.

#Angola: I joined @ZitamarNews' Angola Briefing again yesterday, this time alongside @Chivucute and @CaipLounge to discuss the privatisation programme launched in 2019, specifically if it's opened the economy or simply replaced one hierarchy with another.

Humpata principalmente. Palanca. E mesmo assim. Adorei por uma semana. Mais que isso? Tu começas a ver as mesmas pessoas 24/7. Depois dá vontade de sushi. Onde?!
7 dias lá e entendo logo as limitações.
