In the most recent Newsletter of the American Weil Society, I wrote what I believe to be a minimal, yet important, few paragraphs about what I think our community should be doing and thinking about in the context of our contemporary moment. I hope you will read it.

Happy 116th Birthday Simone Weil. You would have hated all this*
*Gesticulates wildly.
If there was ever a reason not to read this bad article, Ganz's promotion of this travesty is one.
I'm a bit of a Weil skeptic, despite or because of that I really liked @j_ckh_ns_n's piece in @thedrift_mag thedriftmag.com/whose-weil/
The article is bad because it falls into the same trap it claims others do. Also it bases its reading of Weil on Gravity & Grace which is not hers, but a cherry-picked collection of discontinuous fragments by a Vichy sympathizer. Also, she was not a "virulent anti-Semite".

Weil and her readers deserve better than this warmed over misogyny of past men who wrote biographies of her.
Weil scholars don't consider Gravity & Grace to be a useful source for her thought. And this is a terrible misreading of The Need for Roots.
Nothing is so absolute about Simone Weil as the difficulty of parsing her contradictions. “Her writing radiates a cosmic empathy that coexists, sometimes on the same page, with a strain of intolerance blind to life’s tragicomedy,” Judith Thurman writes. nyer.cm/LZoMuGg
