As an executive coach for tech leaders, Dr. Kyle Elliott finds himself referencing Judge Judy Sheindlin in sessions with clients who want to sharpen their communication and executive presence. The parallels are more useful than you'd expect.
Five principles worth taking from her approach:
Say it once, then stop talking. Judy makes her ruling and moves on. Most leaders make a strong point and then keep going â hedging, softening, adding context until the original message is buried. Brevity reads as confidence. Over-explaining signals the opposite.
Bring the right proof to the right person. Judy doesn't care what you think. She wants the contract, the text message, the canceled check.
One of Elliott's clients, a VP of engineering, couldn't get CEO buy-in on a process change â until they reframed the pitch around revenue and backed it with concrete evidence from a previous company. The CEO was on board almost immediately. Having proof isn't enough. It has to be proof the other person actually cares about.
Be consistent enough that people stop managing you. When your team can't predict how you'll react, they spend energy gauging your mood instead of doing the work. They soften bad news, delay difficult conversations and over-prepare for your reaction.
Consistency removes all of that extra work â and brings you better information, earlier.
Make room for healthy disagreement. On Judy Justice, Judy's granddaughter regularly pushes back on her conclusions, and Judy makes space for it. Strong communication isn't steering everyone to the same conclusion. It's building an environment where people can disagree openly and still respect each other afterward. That's how the best thinking surfaces.
Tell the truth. Her most repeated line: "If you tell the truth, you don't have to have a good memory." For leaders, honesty isn't just ethical â it's practical.
Your words get repeated, quoted and scrutinized. A single inconsistency can undo years of trust. The leaders who earn credibility over the long run are the ones whose private words and public words match.
Most executive communication problems trace back to violating at least one of these five. The good news: all of them are learnable.

"Here is what Iâve learned, having lived with panic attacks for years. You cannot reason your way out of one, and no one can reason you out of one either. When itâs happening, the part of my brain that knows Iâm safe goes quiet. Logic doesnât land, and facts donât help. Someone insisting 'youâre fine' often makes it worse.â ~Dr. Kyle Elliott
