Everyone knows Japan's foreign population has grown rapidy in the past 10 years but just to give you a real sense on the ground of the change in Osaka:
In 2012, there were 3,857 Vietnamese and 951 Nepalis in Osaka. In 2024, the number of Vietnamese grew to 62,000 and Nepalis grew to almost 20,000. Huge increase in a span of just 12 years.
Sushiro and Kura Sushi are always packed with families. While they’re not Saizeriya prices, Japanese kaiten sushi restaurants can feed many Japanese families at an affordable price range that would be unthinkable in America where it’s easily $100 to eat out for a family of 4
I love Sushiro. I know it’s not quite the same as Saizeriya (@CacheThatCheque), but we went for lunch today. It was full of families with 3+ children and felt so relaxing and fun. My kid loves the natto maki and I get to drink Nihonshu.

There won’t be a second date but at least she now knows that Vietnamese in Japan have the largest per capita crime rate among foreign criminals
I have nothing against Vietnamese people as individuals but it’s starting to feel ridiculous when you see news stories nearly everyday in Japan about Vietnamese gangs stealing copper wire, shoplifting, robbing old people, and smuggling drugs.
Japan basically imported over half a million Vietnamese workers in their 20s and 30s from poor provinces in a span of just 10 years. The median age in Japan is 50 years old and frankly many Japanese people are sort of aloof and unused to crime so they’re easy targets for foreign criminals who can organize.
“Security” at many Japanese drugstores (popular shoplifting targets) is often literally just a retired ojisan working part time while collecting a pension. Many old people in Japan also live alone and have assets (numerous stories about old people in Japan living alone in the countryside getting robbed and murdered by Vietnamese as of late)
The good news is that the Vietnamese crime wave we’ve been seeing now may have reached a peak as Vietnam’s supply of extra labor has been likely tapped out due to its rising economy
The good news is that if you’re not fixated on buying an akiya, there is a huge supply of 40+ year old danchi you can buy on the cheap in many suburbs for less than 100k USD.
The drawback though is that all your neighbors will be old people, Soka Gakkai, and other foreigners

Just another anecdote: I am seeing many Vietnamese now with families and young children and expect to see more and more (in Osaka anyway)
Technically many of the Vietnamese on trainee visas are barred from bringing family members but it’s possible to also now upgrade their visa statuses (through completion of a trainee program or passing the JLPT) to bring over family members or get a regular humanities work visa and bring a spouse and children to Japan on dependent visas. Also not unusual probably to marry other Vietnamese in Japan and start families as the community in Japan keeps growing.
While most Vietnamese workers in Japan will likely be unable to obtain PR under the new rules, the reality will still be that in the future, Japan will likely have a significant and growing community of Vietnamese workers and their families residing in Japan

Japanese sister in law bought an akiya. She bought a 100 year old house on some land on the cheap but then had dump over 5m yen of her own money to fix up the place.
Over 5 years later and she’s still constantly putting in her own money and time in the house. Talked to her recently and she told me she’s getting married and giving up on the house.
I know it sounds romantic to buy an Akiya in the Inaka but most are time and money sinks. Most of the Akiya YouTubers seem to embrace DIY as a hobby and see the work they do on their house as good content for their YouTube channel
