AB 1266 is coming for a vote in the Senate. It’s time to end debtor’s prisons now! #debtfreejustice
As of July 10, 2023, Californians cannot be charged fees for record sealing or changing a plea, etc. We’ve now eliminated more than half of the 90 criminal admin fees in California. #debtfreejustice
California’s current restitution system is broken and fails survivors, youth, and their families. #AB1186 is a win-win for crime survivors and youth!
Nick was ordered to pay restitution at just 13 years old. Kids shouldn’t have to pay for their freedom. #AB1186 provides accountability without financial burden.
AB 1186 is moving on to the Senate!!
Final Vote: 57-13-10 💪🏽

Way to go @Mendocino_Court @SanBernCourt,San Mateo,Sierra, Sutter & Butte counties for eliminating civil assessments! We commend you for taking a stand in no longer punishing people with an excessive fee when they can’t afford to pay a fine or experience barriers attending court.
As a result of our work on civil assessments, we have successfully eliminated over $1.1 BILLION of debt carried by mostly Black and brown Californians who could not afford to pay a fine for a minor infraction! Follow us to see what we’ve got in store for this year.
