Scouting Matters! The Boston Red Sox selected Jeff Bagwell in the fourth round (110th overall) of the 1989 Major League Amateur Baseball draft. In his first professional assignment, the Red Sox sent Jeff Bagwell to Single-A, Winter Haven Red Sox in the Florida State League, where in 1989 he batted .310 with two home runs. Then in 1990, while playing for the Double-A New Britain Red Sox, Bagwell won the Eastern League MVP Award. In 136 games with New Britain, he batted .333 with 160 hits, 4 HR’s, 61 RBI, 34 doubles, seven triples, 73 BB, 57 strikeouts, 422 OBP, .457 SLG. He finished first in the league in hits and doubles, second in batting, OBP and OPS, fourth in BB’s, fifth in SLG, ninth in runs scored and tenth in RBI’s. Late in the 1990 season, the Red Sox, who were in search of relief pitching to improve their chances of making the playoffs contacted the Houston Astros about RHP Larry Andersen. Stan Benjamin who scouted the New England region for the Houston Astros, recommended that they ask for Jeff Bagwell in return. The Astros initially hesitated concerned about his sparse home run production, but Scout Stan Benjamin stuck to his guns and didn’t waver, and persuaded the Astros quipping that “New Britain's Beehive Field was so large that Babe Ruth couldn't hit home runs in that ballpark.”’ On August 30, 1990, the Red Sox took the Astros' offer. The trade is now considered one of the most one-sided trades in baseball history. Jeff Bagwell went on to be inducted into MLB’s Hall of Fame. Scouting matters! Whether it’s Intentional scouting, Pro scouting or Amateur scouting, it matters!

Boy got some ups! Love the camera angle! @prestochris23
In a game filled with offense, SIU's defense forced a pair of huge turnovers in the 59-31 win at SEMO...and both came courtesy Chris Presto. @prestochris23 forced a fumble in the 1st qtr and made a highlight reel interception in the 2nd qtr...both led to Saluki TDs.

The summer before a players freshman year of college baseball. Position players should play as many competitive games as possible. Pitchers should throw as many competitive (responsible) innings as possible. Both should be absolutely addicted to the weight room and conditioning. Walking on campus game ready is extraordinarily important. Yes, game ready. Strong, physical, in shape and ready to win playing time. Playing time is the goal. Not the transfer portal.

The not so “little things” that win ⚾️ games: HBP’s BB’s Drag bunt hits Sacrifice bunts Putting balls in play with 2 strikes Moving runners Unfortunately, these usually don’t help you make the highlights, but they do help you win!!!! #BaseballTruth

One of the best scouts I've ever been around (Tom Kotchman) and one of my mentors always said. I want to see kids play in intersquad games (so called meaningless games) and or practice. Why? He said how they played in low adrenaline environments is who they really are. MLB seasons are long, and players have to be studs even when the adrenaline is low.

When I visit our Minor League clubs, I don't just jump right into coaching. The first thing I do is listen and watch. I start "collecting coins." "Collecting coins" is finding out about who the players really are. I want to learn about them. Were there two parents in the house growing up? Just mom? Just dad? Any mentors? Did they love school or struggle with it? What do they like to do when they're not on the field? Movies? Books? How do they learn best? Anyone can read a scouting report and tell you about their arm strength or speed. But real trust starts building when you take the time to learn about who someone really is. Here's what I've learned: nobody lets you coach them until they trust you. And they won't trust you until they know you care about them as a person, not just what they can do on the field. Make a difference today. Love, Clint
