Once her daughter's adoption was finalized, state support stopped. No follow-ups. No check-ins. A family with education and means still had to send their daughter to a private program out of state, at their own expense, to get care that should have been built into the system from day one.
"But families adopting out of foster care who don't have those things," Stacey says, "they're relying on Medicaid, and there's nowhere else for them to go either." Post-adoption trauma care shouldn't depend on who you happen to run into at a conference.

TOMORROW: Join us on Weds, 10/21 at 2pmET! Every generation has a responsibility to prepare young people for the future they will inherit. Today, that responsibility is unlike anything we've faced before. Artificial intelligence is transforming work and learning, mental health challenges continue to rise, and the pace of technological and social change is accelerating.
At the same time, we know more than ever about how young people grow, learn, and thrive. The question is no longer whether we have the science. It's whether we're willing to organize our policies and systems around what we already know.
In our 10/21 virtual gathering, Philip Steigman will share the vision behind The Future of Thriving, a national initiative to build a shared policy agenda for children and young people from birth through age 25. This work seeks to translate decades of developmental research into the policies, investments, professional preparation, and community conditions that shape everyday life.
Participants will explore why this moment represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to rethink how we prepare young people for the future and what it would take to make thriving the shared destination across education, health, philanthropy, business, and government - and the rest of the child-serving community.

“I saw how this approach in particular really invited them to become participants in the classroom rather than telling them what to do. Because that’s the ability that you lose in trauma. You lose the ability to believe in yourself.”

"None of this replaces clinical care, and McKinsey says as much themselves. It's organizational design, not treatment. And it's one more citation for the case CTIPP has been building for years: safety, regulation, and relationship aren't extras. They're how systems perform."

Stacey spent 25 years in early childhood education. None of it prepared her for what came after adopting her daughter from foster care. It took nearly a decade to get a diagnosis: reactive attachment disorder, the result of early trauma that never appeared in the adoption paperwork.
The turning point came by accident, through an offhand conversation with a mental health consultant who told her: "She's experienced trauma. Putting her in time-out isn't going to work. She needs connection." Stacey's response says it all: "People aren't going to get by on luck. That's not something we can rely on."

"My door is always open" is not psychological safety. Plenty of people learned early that speaking up gets punished, ignored, or used against them later. Saying the door is open doesn't undo that history.
Trauma sensitivity expert Adriana Leigh named what actually builds trust: structured meetings, agendas set in advance, and real follow-through when someone raises a concern. Not a policy. A pattern people can count on.

"When we restore our capacity to see from within ourselves as the collective, we restore the agency and power that is our birthright as humans without imagining there is a separate “world out there.”"

You can have a wonderful individual manager and still work inside a harmful culture. That was the core point Adriana Leigh made during CTIPP's September Community Advocacy Network call.
Trauma sensitivity isn't a coping skill you hand to one good boss. It takes alignment across four levels: individual awareness, leadership behavior under pressure, workplace culture, and the policies and workload structures beneath it all. Skip one and the rest doesn't hold.

"The upside data is that employees who feel supported, safe, and adaptable at work report engagement and innovation at six times the rate of those who don't. Organizations led by more reflective leaders are nearly twice as likely to adapt quickly to change."
