Before the break, @CS_Cardinal fifth graders partnered with Hillcrest Transitional Housing to bring donations to those in need. Every week Hillcrest has a food pantry residents can shop from, and last month they held a warm winter drive so students could bring in hats, gloves, scarves and socks for the cold weather. Cheryl Anderson and Andrea Wonka-Jasper's fifth-grade classes had a competition to see if the boys or girls would end up bringing more donations, and the girls were proud to say it was them!
The idea started after one of the fifth-grade reading groups read “How to Steal a Dog,” a novel about a girl and her family living in their car. The girl has the idea to steal a dog and receive the cash reward to help her mother provide. During the reading group, one of Wonka-Jasper's students mentioned a family that he knows who is living in their car. They brainstormed how to help that specific family but then the group wanted to do more. Wonka-Jasper's parents happen to be connected to Hillcrest Transitional Housing, so they had their liaison, Robyn Lee, come out to Countryside to speak to the grade. On Dec. 18, she came back to receive an abundance of donations!
“The kids were thrilled to hear that THEY could help,” Wonka-Jasper said. “Title I schools are often overlooked as a population that can help others, as we are often the ones generously receiving help.”

Amazing morning! @CS_Cardinal staff revisited Aug. building PL, dug into ELA standards, connected the corresponding ELL standards, had vertical discussions to streamline building focus, & discussed instructional strategies. All with a gnarly 80s retro theme. #opsforwardtogether
