As Uganda marks 64 years of independence, CEHURD joins fellow Ugandans in celebrating the freedoms, resilience and progress that have shaped our nation. Independence is also about the freedom to live healthy, dignified lives and to access justice without fear, stigma or discrimination.
Through our work on the #RightToHealth, sexual and reproductive health and rights, legal aid and community empowerment, we continue to push for a Uganda where every person, especially women and girls, young people and underserved communities can enjoy these freedoms.
As we celebrate, we recommit to building a community where health, dignity and justice are a reality for all.

Today, on #InternationalSafeAbortionDay, we affirm that access to safe, quality abortion care is an important part of sexual and reproductive healthcare.

Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 45% of abortions are unsafe, with almost all unsafe abortions occurring in developing countries. WHO further estimates that between 4.7% and 13.2% of maternal deaths globally are attributable to unsafe abortion. Unsafe abortion therefore remains an important and preventable contributor to maternal morbidity and mortality.
On this #InternationalSafeAbortionDay, the Coalition to Stop Maternal Mortality due to Unsafe Abortion (CSMMUA) calls for stronger health systems, greater legal and policy clarity, and timely, quality and dignified reproductive healthcare for women and girls.

The consequences are also borne by already constrained health systems. Available research has estimated that treating complications associated with unsafe abortion costs the health system approximately US$14 million annually. Beyond the financial cost to the health system are the costs borne by women, families and communities through illness, disability, lost productivity, household expenditure and, in the most serious cases, loss of life.

Today, we mark International Safe Abortion Day.
Across Africa, women and girls continue to face legal, financial and social barriers to safe abortion care. Yet the push for access, dignity and reproductive autonomy continues.
Safe abortion is healthcare. Reproductive rights are human rights.
We call on advocates, healthcare providers, governments and communities to join in the fight and break down the barriers that prevent women and girls from accessing safe abortion care.
Together, we can advance access, dignity and push for reproductive autonomy.

Today Is International Safe Abortion Day - September 28th, 2026 And We Are Not Whispering. We Are SHOUTING.
As AWAC marks 11 YEARS of feminist resistance, we stand in Solidarity In Action to Advance Reproductive Justice and Demand Health Systems that Deliver Comprehensive Abortion Care for Marginalized women such as Women Sex Workers, Gender Expansive People, among others!
Abortion Care Is Health Care. Period.
Accurate Safe Abortion Information Saves Lives.
Our bodies are not battlegrounds for patriarchy, the state, and imperialist moral panics.
Bodily Autonomy Is Non-Negotiable.
We see the pushback for what it is. The so-called African Charter on Family, Sovereignty and Values is a FAKE CHARTER - a patriarchal, anti-rights manifesto dressed in "African values" to control women and gender-diverse persons. It weaponizes culture and sovereignty to criminalize our choices, to deny us care, to let us bleed and die from unsafe abortion.
We call it out: #FakeAfricanCharter
This charter is not African. It is not about family. It is an organized backlash against our hard-won SRHR gains. It seeks to roll back our rights to safe abortion and entrench systemic violence against women in all our diversities.
We refuse. We resist. We will not go back.
No law, no fake charter, no pulpit will stop us from claiming what is ours: The right to decide, to not decide, to live, to thrive.
Safe Abortion Now! Reproductive Justice Now!

In our recent report, “Assessing Access to SRHR Services for LBQ Womxn in Uganda: faruganda.org/wp-content/upl…, we found that accessing safe and stigma free SRHR services remains a significant challenge.
Today, 28 September 2026, we commemorate SAD 2026 under the theme: “Solidarity in Action: Advance Reproductive Justice and Urgently Strengthen Health Systems for Comprehensive Abortion Care.”
For our community, solidarity means ensuring that womxn can access reproductive healthcare without fear, shame, stigma, or isolation.
Reproductive justice means providing care that is free from prejudice, judgment, discrimination, and violence healthcare grounded in dignity, respect, and bodily autonomy.
Let’s stand together in Solidarity and Action to advocate for safe, secure, and inclusive environments where all voices are heard and reproductive choices are respected.
Let’s open doors to non-judgmental, stigma-free access to PAC and CAC. Together, we can help protect and save ALL womxn’s lives.
Bodily autonomy is non-negotiable. Access to SAC is a fundamental human right not a privilege and never a crime.
We deserve #SafeAndLegalCare now.

International Safe Abortion Day offers another moment to interrogate the colonial legal legacies that continue to influence access to safe abortion in Africa.
In their opinion piece, Dr. Jessica Oga and Dr. Moses Mulumba examine the colonial origins of Senegal’s abortion law and its continued application in post-independence Senegal.
Their analysis raises important questions about inherited legal systems, reproductive rights, and the pursuit of reproductive justice in Africa.

A choice can shape a future.
When young people have accurate information and access to contraception, they can make informed decisions about their reproductive health.
This week, let’s make informed choices possible.
