#APT28 is using weaponized Office documents to deliver the Covenant Grunt backdoor. We detected a cluster of seven malicious .docm and .xls files between July 8 and July 14, with some having AV detection ratios as low as 5/62 at the time of first submission. Our THOR APT Scanner's YARA rules caught what traditional engines missed. The documents use obfuscated VBA macros that assemble strings at runtime to evade static analysis, perform XOR-encoded host reconnaissance, and drop a 64-bit Covenant Grunt loader DLL disguised as a log file. The campaign uses Russian-language lures like "Прайс.xls" (Price List) and business-themed filenames like "accounts.xls", consistent with APT28 targeting patterns. Network analysis shows Dropbox being used as C2 infrastructure. This activity aligns with Zscaler's reporting on Operation NeuSploit (CVE-2026-21509). Analysis & IOCs: github.com/NextronSystems/io…

37-Year-Old Kernel Flaw Exploited to Gain Root Access on OpenBSD — PoC Released Details: cybersecuritynews.com/37-yea… A proof-of-concept exploit that gains root access on OpenBSD by chaining two kernel flaws. The main bug dates back about 37 years to the original BSD source code. The flaw survived because a shared memory attachment counter named shm_nattch used a signed 16-bit value. OpenBSD fixed both issues before Calif published the exploit on October 16, 2026. The published research covers a local privilege escalation exploit and does not report active use in real-world attacks. OpenBSD addressed the integer overflow in Errata 018 and the reference-counting use-after-free in Errata 026. #cybersecuritynews

🚨 Plex2Shell vulnerability chain reportedly exploited against outdated Plex servers PoC: github.com/code-zm/plex2shel… A security researcher says an internet-facing Plex honeypot was compromised on October 17 using an exploit chain targeting four recently disclosed vulnerabilities: • CVE-2026-96652 • CVE-2026-96654 • CVE-2026-96655 • CVE-2026-96656 ⠀ The flaws can be chained to achieve unauthenticated remote code execution on affected Plex Media Server installations. ⠀ Observed payloads included an XMRig cryptocurrency miner and a proxy application named “myawesomeproxy,” which could allow attackers to route traffic through compromised residential connections. ⠀ Potential signs of compromise include suspicious child processes launched by Plex Media Server and processes or command lines containing: • myawesomeproxy • mylovelyminer • x12345 • --rig-id • --donate-level • proxystream[.]st ⠀ Plex fixed the vulnerabilities in Media Server 1.43.3.10861. Administrators running earlier versions should update immediately and inspect internet-facing Linux and Docker deployments for suspicious processes. ⠀ The exploitation evidence currently comes from one researcher’s honeypot and has not been independently confirmed as a wider campaign.
