In 1974, a chance meeting in a Memphis parking lot led to one of the quieter, more personal chapters of Elvis Presley’s final years.
Magnolia “Maggie” Smith was a college student majoring in biology. She had lost her father a few years earlier, she and her mother were struggling financially, and she had no reliable way to get to and from classes.
Elvis struck up a conversation with her, learned the situation, and offered her a job at Graceland. His main condition was that school come first. He wanted her focused on her studies and her grades.
He followed through on that in practical ways. He bought her a car so she could get to campus. He covered her tuition. He arranged regular pay and gave her a quiet place at Graceland where she could study without interruption.
Her official title from 1974 to 1977 was Executive Assistant.
The role was not limited to household work; she helped with whatever was needed around the house, spent time with Lisa Marie, answered phones, and traveled with the family on both Memphis and West Coast trips. A large staff kept Elvis’s life running, and she was part of that team in his last three years.
Maggie later described Elvis as a father figure. He would call to check on her grades and ask for full reports on her classes. He cried with her, prayed with her, and read to her.
One book he returned to was The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran, which he gave her. She recalled his humor as well as those more emotional moments, and she spoke of feeling closer to him than many people realized.
Accounts of the relationship appear in later writings that quote Maggie directly and in the wider oral history of Graceland staff.
Elvis’s well-known pattern of generosity toward people around him—cars, support for education, personal attention—makes the outline of the story consistent with how he treated others in his circle, even if the full details remain less documented than his public career.
Maggie’s role, as she and others described it, was both practical and personal: a job that prioritized her education while placing her inside the daily life of Graceland and the Presley family.🌹

These verses of Scripture bring comfort.
Today marks three years since the barbaric slaughter of October 7. Please pray for the families and friends of the precious people who were massacred. Please pray for healing and peace for the survivors.
This world is busted and broken.
Christians are being massacred in Nigeria, Uyghur Muslims are being tortured and killed in China, the citizens of Burma and Iran are being slaughtered by their own government. Persecution is escalating globally. Please pray.
Racism of every kind, bigotry and antisemitism is not only evil, it’s ignorant and stupid. The throne of God is made up of every tongue, tribe and nation. That is good news!
