Captain Cyber's Tip for this week's Cybersecurity Awareness Month: Phishing scams are one of the most common cyber threats in Namibia, and they are getting harder to spot.
A phishing message is designed to trick you into clicking a link, downloading a file, or sharing personal information. It may arrive as an email, an SMS, a WhatsApp message, or even a social media post.
Here is how to spot one:
- It creates a sense of urgency: "Your account will be closed in 24 hours."
- It asks for your PIN, password, or banking details.
- The sender's email address or number does not match the organisation it claims to be from.
- The link leads to a website that looks real but has a slightly different address.
If something feels wrong, trust that feeling. Do not click. Do not share. Report it.

Today, the world celebrates World Post Day, observed annually on 9 October to mark the founding of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874, the body that connects postal networks across 192 countries and keeps global communication flowing.
This year's theme, "One Postal Network, Infinite Possibilities," highlights the power of an interconnected world where communication knows no borders.
At CRAN, we share this vision. As Namibia's communications regulator, we work to ensure that every channel of communication, from postal to digital, is accessible, reliable, and protected for all Namibians.

Over the past two days, CRAN had the pleasure of hosting a delegation from the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) for a benchmarking engagement focused on Universal Access and Service.
The engagement provided an opportunity to share CRAN’s experiences in implementing the Universal Service Fund (USF), including key successes, lessons learned, project sustainability and the challenges encountered.
Such engagements are an important part of strengthening regional cooperation, knowledge exchange and regulatory learning, as we collectively work towards expanding meaningful and inclusive digital connectivity across our region.
We thank our colleagues from ZICTA for the valuable engagement and our CRAN team for sharing their expertise and experiences.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and Captain Cyber is kicking it off with the most important tip of all: your password.
A weak or reused password is one of the most common ways cybercriminals gain access to personal accounts, banking apps, and business systems.
Here is what a strong password looks like:
- At least 12 characters long
- A combination of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols
- No personal information such as your name, date of birth, or phone number
- Different from every other password you use
- Enable two-factor authentication on every account that offers it. It adds a second layer of protection even if your password is compromised.
Follow Captain Cyber every Tuesday this October for a new cybersecurity tip.
