Individuals with low-risk pregnancies who plan a community-based birth- either at home or in a freestanding birth center can achieve better outcomes for themselves without compromising safety for their newborns. ow.ly/cfH250GoRV9

What I find the most depressing about the maternal health discourse is the idea that some maternal deaths are inevitable. My aunt provided care in the MS Delta in the 70s/80s & never lost a patient. With supportive environments & anti racist healthcare, it can be done.
Between 1949-1981, Margaret Charles Smith delivered 1/3 of the babies born in Greene County, Alabama, more than 3500 in total without a single maternal loss. In 1996 she published her autobiography Listen to Me Good: The Life Story of an Alabama Midwife. #BlackMidwivesMatter

The let’s talk about making care accessible at home: bringing the birth team to your home. We’ve expanded access to telehealth, let’s give people more options for Birth, too! #HB3401 @ILSenDems @ILSenateGOP #OverdueForMidwives #twill

The Illinois Senate is choosing to make Illinois consumers wait for licensed midwives. #HB3401 has a supermajority plus 4 as senate sponsors and yet it remains on 2nd reading. Where is the sense in this? #OverdueForMdiwves #twill

Yes! We must invest in midwives! “We owe [nurses and midwives] so much,” @DrTedros the @WHO Director General said yesterday. The pandemic has reminded us that “these are incredible people doing incredible jobs under incredible circumstances.” ow.ly/jONG50EYjOq

No partisan bickering over here: #HB3401 has substantial bipartisan support. Illinois Senate, why not wrap up the weekend with a vote everyone will feel great about? #OverdueForMdiwves #twill

Now we are in the Senate, passed Senate committee unanimously, with many congratulations on our efforts on this bill. But, due to a single, non-healthcare OR consumer “stakeholder”, the senate seems to lack a willingness to complete this task which has such overwhelming support.
