POWERFUL... 🤌🏼
🟥 Mark Carney: “When politicians (like Pierre Poilievre) claim our great democracies are broken, it's not because they want to FIX them. It's because they want a license to DEMOLISH...
It's a model that has been USED time and time again: Create an external constraint to STARVE the beast of government, in a misguided view that SLASHING will lead to growing...
...When Poilievre shouts 'axe the tax!', he's really whispering, 'can the plan' and leaving us with NOTHING.
Demolition is NOT a plan.” 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Shealyn worked with community partner Jennifer Makar @cityofcalgary & @MountRoyalU faculty mentor Mauricio Latap. At first she felt overwhelmed by the complexity. Mapping the system helped “see the formation of an entangled web, displaying how each aspect related to each other.”
“Unlocking Community Adaptive Capacity” includes a tree as the foundation for Shealyn’s systems map, capturing not only what is beneath the surface, but also how we might move forward into flourishing green futures.

Identifying and addressing the systemic barriers, drivers, and enablers to increase the adaptive capacity in the face of climate change was the focus of Shealyn Fong’s Catamount Fellowship project.

For her Catamount project, Aira Siodina researched how might we leverage the role of government to ensure wrap around supports and programs are available to children (5 - 12 years of age) and families facing adversities.
#Catamount #UndergraduateResearch #CommunityEngagement
Aira's journey with community partner Kathy Anderson, from @TrellisYYC, and MRU faculty mentor Dan Devoe focused on how families navigate adverse challenges. Aira used the Ecological Model to capture the nested layers of systems that impact a child, and noted that...
... the most important thing to recognize is that ultimately each child’s system will be unique so there “is no uniform approach when it comes to providing help and services for children and youth.”

#UndergraduateResearch
For his Catamount project, Reese Tofts focused on the question of how we might leverage technology to catalyze cross-sectoral collaboration to streamline service provision for families experiencing domestic violence.
#Catamount #UndergraduateResearch #CommunityEngagement
In the report, Breaking Barriers and Building Bridges, Reese documents his learnings working with community partner Kate Bowers from @YWcalgary and #MRU faculty mentor Holly Johnson. They unpacked the issue of domestic violence in Calgary, digging beneath the surface...
in the systems map “Understanding Why Domestic Violence is Happening in Calgary”, and explored the potential of ShelterLink - an app that could help to alleviate bottlenecks in service provision.

Catamount Fellow Ayan Ahmed-Aden worked with Megan Kimler from Umoja Community Mosaic, and @MountRoyalU faculty mentors Ranjan Datta and Nina Morgen on how might we dismantle racial & socioeconomic obstacles in the participation of Black & racialized youth in higher education.
This question was raised by Umoja in recognition of the racial and class barriers that prevent youth from connecting to essential services.
#UndergraduateResearch #CommunityEngagement
In the report, Social Inclusion and Participation of Black & Racialized Youth in Higher Education, Ayan highlighted the complexity of this challenge & the research gaps which might improve social inclusion.
