Many of us leave our phones, laptops, tablets and even power tools plugged in long after they’re fully charged, but this extra time on the charger can backfire. Leaving a device plugged in longer than needed can increase heat and put unnecessary stress on the battery. Over time, this extra heat can degrade the battery, cause it to swell or even trigger a dangerous fire. Always unplug your device when it is fully charged. 💯🔋 #FirePreventionWeek #SafeCharging #FireSafety #FirePrevention #BatterySafety #CommunityRiskReduction @NFPA

Keep your home safe by recycling your lithium-ion batteries the right way. Throwing these batteries in the regular trash or recycling bins is dangerous because they could catch fire. Recycling them at an official drop-off location is always the safest choice. Tomorrow, we are co-hosting family-friendly events across Colorado for Fire Prevention Week! If you are heading to the Fruita event, Mesa County Hazardous Waste Disposal will be there providing free battery collection! Bring your old power tools and device batteries to toss right into their bin. Learn more about the events at bit.ly/FPW26. Come join the fun and learn more about lithium-ion battery safety. Can't make it? Visit CALL2RECYCLE.ORG to find a recycling spot near you. #FirePreventionWeek #SafeCharging #FireSafety #FirePrevention #BatterySafety #CommunityRiskReduction @MesaCountyNews @NFPA

⚡It’s #FirePreventionWeek, and we are talking about safe charging! E-bikes, scooters and large power tools are very common today. But did you know their batteries store a huge amount of energy? If a battery breaks, a fire can start and spread very quickly. Protect your home and loved ones by charging these large batteries outside when you can and do not block exits. #SafeCharging #FireSafety #FirePrevention #BatterySafety #CommunityRiskReduction @NFPA

The Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) Northwest District recently hosted a Search and Rescue (SAR) aviation fly-in training for SAR teams from Grand, Jackson, Routt, and Summit counties. During the event, DFPC showcased two primary aerial assets: the Multi-Mission Aircraft (MMA) N327SF and the Type 1 (FIREHAWK©) helicopter N3802C. Flight crews presented their operational capabilities, specialized technology, and mission support, followed by a Q&A session with ground teams. In total, the training brought together 24 partners from across the various agencies. Key agency leaders in attendance included the Grand County Sheriff, Routt County Sheriff, Summit County Special Operations Sergeant, and the Wildland Operations Specialist from Summit Fire & EMS. The event was a success, reinforcing interagency communication and strengthening multi-jurisdictional response for future missions.

✈️🔋 When charging on a plane, keep portable charging devices on the tray table. Do not charge devices in overhead compartments and never charge e-cigarettes or vapes on a plane. If a battery overheats or fails, it is important for the flight crew to be able to respond quickly. #FirePreventionWeek #SafeCharging #FireSafety #FirePrevention #BatterySafety #CommunityRiskReduction @NFPA

Charge your devices on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk or floor. Beds, couches and pillows can trap heat and block airflow, which can cause a battery to overheat. #FirePreventionWeek #SafeCharging #FireSafety #FirePrevention #BatterySafety #CommunityRiskReduction @NFPA

Saving a few dollars on a discount charging cable is not worth the risk. Always plug in your devices using the original cord or one officially authorized by the manufacturer. A frayed, damaged or unapproved cord can easily ruin your lithium-ion battery and spark a dangerous fire. #SafeCharging with your electronics goes a long way in keeping your family safe! #FirePreventionWeek #FireSafety #FirePrevention #BatterySafety #CommunityRiskReduction @NFPA

DFPC’s Tava module, Battalion Chief (BC) Wasielewski, and Risk & Wellness Chief David Vitwar volunteered at the Fallen Firefighter Memorial in September. Thousands traveled to Colorado Springs for the 2026 IAFF Fallen Firefighter Memorial, where 288 fallen members were honored, and their names were forever etched on the Memorial Wall. Tava spent 6 hours greeting over 200 families as they arrived at the Colorado Springs Airport, while BC Wasielewski drove families around town. The Colorado Springs Professional FFs work to make the families' time in Colorado Springs a memorable one by meeting them at the airport, assisting with getting luggage, and providing transportation to their hotel, around town during the week, to the memorial, and back to the airport following the event. DFPC’s assistance was greatly appreciated by Colorado Springs Local 5 Leadership.

Members of DFPC's Steel City module assisted Deputy Chief Daniels in teaching 120 2nd- and 3rd-graders the importance of weather to firefighter safety at the 19th annual Rye Elementary School Science Day at Rye Mountain Park. Firefighters then taught the kids how to take weather observations using a belt weather kit. Students were provided with the needed PPE (personal protective equipment), writing implements, and a reference guide (kids' fire helmet, crayons, DFPC wildland coloring book, and tape measure).
