Agree with the first part of this. But there was no public debate that preceded Operation Epic Fury. No evidence provided as to why it was necessary. Just a series of constantly shifting assertions and rationales after the fact. That flaw persists today (is the goal to collapse the regime? Force a deal?). The lack of a clear objective and realistic plan to achieve it are the main reasons why most Americans do not support the war.
The political prospects of both men and their parties aside, if either the US or Israel has information/intelligence (via national-technical means (like satellite/remote sensing, SIGINT, or anything else even like HUMINT) about the reconstitution of Iran’s nuclear program (and they can clearly explain the impact of these steps and rank order them by seriousness/threat to the national interest and international security) it must enter the public record and national debate about the use of force against the Islamic Republic at this point in time. The counterproliferation debate deserves no less, as well as the future of an increasingly contentious and unpopular war whose initial reason for being launched has by now sadly been obscured.

A special moment last night at the @HarvardIOP “To give you some idea of what the IOP means to our family, my uncle Teddy, who was not even the chair, did not miss one meeting in 47 years, and he took attendance of the rest of us,” [Caroline] Kennedy said. “He didn’t do it because he wanted control. He did it because he cared.” Kennedy also praised her brother, John F. Kennedy Jr., who she said “was ahead of his time in recognizing that politics, popular culture, and energy were converging.” She noted that the IOP was “the first of its kind” and has inspired more than 50 similar institutes in the U.S. and abroad. “Today, this is still a living memorial for President Kennedy, the one he probably would have most enjoyed,” she said. thecrimson.com/article/2026/…

The U.S.-Saudi nuclear deal is a gamble. The basic bet is that U.S. control over the program can make up for nonproliferation shortcomings. In @ForeignPolicy, I write about three things that need to be true for that bet to pay off (gift link below).

NEW: The US military was prepared to board a Chinese vessel in the Middle East earlier this spring -- during war with Iran -- after an intel report concluded it was transporting components of a nuclear weapons program. But just before the planned operation, officials discovered the report had been generated w/ help of AI & chatbot used by the analyst inaccurately identified what the ship was carrying, sources tell @KatieBoLillis & me.
