I believe that artists should be able to make work about what ever subject matter they feel compassionate about. However they have to realise they don't exist in a bubble and their subject matter should be treated with respect, particularly in cases where they've been abused.

There is a bigger discussion that needs to be had here regarding professionalism in the art world. Science, journalism, academia, etc each have a code of ethics & standard to uphold - without obtaining permission, citing references, among other necessities it will be scrutinised.
