THERMODYNAMIC COMPUTING IS COMING? The third computing paradigm is emerging, and it works by embracing the one thing every other computer fights. Every chip ever built battles thermal noise, the random jitter of electrons. Enormous energy is spent forcing bits to hold a clean 0 or 1 against it (and for quantum 0 and 1) Instead, Thermodynamic computers surrender to it. Their bits, p-bits, are designed to fluctuate randomly, and the machine harnesses that noise AS the computation. Instead of calculating probabilities step by step, the hardware physically becomes the probability distribution, and answers are sampled directly from the physics. Modern AI is mostly probabilistic sampling forced onto deterministic chips, a translation layer that wastes staggering energy. Native probabilistic hardware deletes the layer. Extropic, founded by ex-Google quantum physicists, claims up to 10,000x less energy than GPUs for generative workloads. Where it actually stands: Extropic shipped its first chips, published its scalable architecture in July, and targets Z1, hundreds of thousands of probabilistic circuits, this year. Commerce signed a $75M CHIPS letter of intent in July to onshore the technology, the same office funding quantum. They also require no cryogenics, no exotic fabs. These chips run at room temperature on mature semiconductor nodes available in America today. The map now has three territories. Classical computes what IS. Quantum computes what's POSSIBLE.
