The crisis lasted 444 days, ending on Jan. 20, 1981. 8 Americans were killed ————————————————— 🔴—In April 1983, a suicide car bombing at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, killed 63 people, including 17 Americans. The attack was claimed by Islamic Jihad, an Iran-backed precursor to Hezbollah. ————————————————— 🔴—In Oct 1983 Iran-sponsored Hezbollah operatives drove a truck bomb into the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, killing 241 American service members. ————————————————— 🔴—In December 1983, Iran-backed Hezbollah operatives bombed the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait City using an explosives-laden dump truck. ————————————————— 🔴—In May 1984, Iran struck a Kuwaiti tanker doing business with the U.S. ————————————————— 🔴—In 1987 Iran laid mines in the Gulf, damaging the U.S.-flagged tanker Bridgeton & the USS Stark (killing 37 sailors in a separate Iraqi attack, but Iran’s mining escalated tensions). ————————————————— 🔴—Also in 1987 Iran fired on U.S. helicopters & ships. These actions prompted U.S. retaliation— such as Operation Praying Mantis in 1988, where U.S. forces destroyed Iranian oil platforms and vessels. ————————————————— 🔴—In June, 1996, a truck bomb exploded at the Khobar Towers housing complex in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, where U.S. Air Force personnel were stationed. The attack killed 19 American airmen and injured nearly 500 others. Investigators concluded the bombing was carried out by Saudi Hezbollah (also known as Hezbollah al-Hijaz)— with planning, training, & support from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). ————————————————— 🔴—2003–2011—After the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Iran provided weapons, training, & funding to Shia militias like Kata’ib Hezbollah & Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq, which conducted attacks on U.S. troops. These groups used Iranian-supplied explosively formed penetrators (EFPs) in roadside bombs, responsible for HUNDREDS of American deaths. ————————————————— 🔴—In Jan. 2016, Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces seized 2 U.S. Navy riverine boats, detaining 10 American sailors for a day. Iran released propaganda videos of the sailors, escalating humiliation tactics. ————————————————— 🔴—In 2019 Iranian forces repeatedly harassed U.S. warships in the Persian Gulf. In June 2019, Iran shot down a U.S. Navy RQ-4 Global Hawk drone over international waters. ————————————————— 🔴—In 2019–2021, IRGC fast boats swarmed U.S. vessels multiple times, coming dangerously close & prompting U.S. warning shots. Iran also seized foreign tankers, including those with U.S. ties, amid tanker seizures. ————————————————— 🔴—in January 2020, Iran launched over a dozen ballistic missiles at 2 U.S. military bases in Iraq (Al Asad and Erbil), injuring more than 100 American troops with traumatic brain injuries. ————————————————— 🔴—Starting in 2023 Iran backed proxy groups like the Houthis in Yemen, who launched missile & drone attacks on U.S. ships & bases in the Red Sea & Gulf of Aden. These included strikes on U.S. Navy vessels & commercial shipping. ————————————————— 🔴—In 2025–2026, amid broader conflicts, Iran directly launched missiles at U.S. bases in Qatar, Iraq, & other allies, as part of retaliatory barrages during escalations with Israel & the U.S.
