Mawande Ncume presented on his research that provides understanding of the Mambulu Complex in South Africa, previously thought to be a remnant of ancient ocean floor. Field mapping and new 3D inversion modelling using airborne magnetic data revealed that it is, in fact, a subsurface saucer-shaped complex, representative of typical magmatic processes- effectively casting doubt on the the old theory. #19SAGA2026 #geophysics

David Ngobeni presented on “Integrated Geophysical Investigation of the Shu Shu Hot Springs, KwaZulu‑Natal, South Africa” David investigated the Shu Shu hot springs, exploring the underground mechanisms through aerial surveys and soil electrification. They discovered that large subterranean fractures serve as conduits for rainwater, which penetrates the Earth, gets superheated, and is expelled back to the surface, generating heat. #19SAGA2026

The @CGS_RSA participated in the FFF-Carbon Conference held on 2 October 2026 in Midrand. Dr Taufeeq Dhansay highlighted the role of Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) in delivering near-term emissions reductions for hard-to-abate sectors, while supporting energy security and economic stability. He shared global and local experiences in geological CO₂ storage, emerging carbon sequestration opportunities, and the potential of carbon utilisation to catalyse economic growth. CCUS is an important enabler of the Just Energy Transition and a key mitigation solution for decarbonising heavy industry while supporting sustainable socioeconomic development.

Dr Taufeeq Dhansay also joined the panel discussion, “Coal in a Decarbonised World,” moderated by Tumi Kgomo, President of FFF-Carbon. Responding to the distinction between Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and carbon utilisation, Dr Dhansay explained that CCS focuses primarily on the geological storage of captured CO₂, while carbon utilisation seeks to put captured carbon to productive use across various industries, creating economic value while reducing emissions. He also discussed carbon tax and carbon credits, noting that carbon credits generally operate as a voluntary market mechanism, while carbon tax is a government regulated compliance mechanism aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
