Christians have been engaged in the political sphere for a very long time. The problem is that they haven’t been engaging as Christians, but rather as some participant in some other group.

The public expression of faith has always been a massive force of evangelization, which is why, in part, Jesus told Saint Margaret Mary that he wanted the states and nations of the world to publicly recognize his kingship.

God wants to heal us as individuals in our deepest wounds. He also wants to heal us as a nation in our deepest wounds: politics. He wants us to invite Him in.

Pope Leo XIV says it again in the attached address: "In this sense, politics is the 'highest form of charity' because it can be completely committed to the building up of the common good."

The Catholic politician is not content to merely reference the pope. Instead, he understands his role and his remarks to be essential for his audience and the people within his care and his realm to understand the reason why—and the story behind—Jesus’s establishment of the papacy. As the temporal ruler, his duty is to point toward the papacy, just as a vice president would support the president. The role of a vice president of the United States, even, is not primarily to support the president of the United States, his agenda, and his intentions and will. Even in this office, the vice president’s primary purpose is to serve and support the papacy, because the one occupying it has authority even over the president, who is his immediate and direct report. A few words here or there about how the pope should have the freedom to preach the gospel is not enough. Catholic politicians ought to see themselves as having the responsibility to do more—to use every opportunity to convert the people of their realm to the Church that Christ established by explaining why it is that Jesus chose this office as the means by which all of the nations and their political establishments and offices might be held together and held within.

Unlike the statue made up of the four different types of metal, the kingdom of God is carved out by God. It will last forever.
