H. pylori is the world’s leading infectious cause of cancer. A new global analysis in The Lancet Oncology estimates that infections caused about 2.3 million cancer cases in 2024, roughly 12% of all new cancers. The stomach bacterium Helicobacter pylori alone was linked to ~760,000 cases (mostly non-cardia gastric cancer), accounting for about 4% of all new cancers worldwide. That’s more than HPV, hepatitis B, or any other infectious agent studied. About 85% of non-cardia stomach cancers worldwide are attributed to H. pylori. Most infected people never develop cancer, but the infection is often silent, common, and treatable with antibiotics.
