Teaching season has started. 1st stop: @dundeeuni @CEPMLP. Topic: #mining & #petroleum #taxation. Many think that #tax is a dry, heavy subject. But I can assure you it isn’t, especially if you take one of my courses 😉. Taxation is an important #policy tool. If a fiscal system is properly designed it can allow host governments to achieve many macroeconomic, social & environmental objectives that go beyond the basic task of revenue generation. But a poorly designed system can lead to various ills in a country. The #extractive industry - that is #oil, #gas & mining - has many features that require the design of a special fiscal regime. Getting the system right from the beginning - balancing between different interests and withstanding market volatility is truly an art.
